Chicago Man Killed in Romeoville Industrial Accident

A 23-year-old Chicago man died after reportedly becoming trapped beneath three tons of granite early Thursday.

A worker died Thursday morning after reportedly being trapped under three tons of granite in an industrial accident at a facility in the Marquette Industrial Park, 1265 Naperville Drive.

Emilio Gallardo, 23, of Chicago, died in what the Will County Coroner's Office described as a "work-related mishap."

According to a press release issued by Assistant Fire Chief Mike Flaherty, Romeoville firefighters responded to a report of an injury around 9:15 a.m.

Firefighters who arrived on the scene determined the worker was dead and requested equipment assistance from a nearby fire department, Flaherty said.

"The victim was heavily entrapped and required extensive extrication," Flaherty said in the release.

At 10:30 a.m., a Downers Grove Fire Department squad was called to the scene to help extricate the worker from beneath 6,000 pounds of granite.

A worker from a nearby business also assisted with operating equipment at the scene, according to the press release. A man who works at a neighboring business declined to give his name, but said firefighters had asked for help operating a forklift.

Flaherty said firefighters worked for more than three hours to remove the victim, whose body then was released to the Will County Coroner's Office.

Romeoville Fire Department spokesman Brandon Street said no additional information was available Thursday afternoon.

Romeoville police are investigating the incident, according to the coroner's office.
