Woodridge Man Charged With Sexual Assault of 11-Year-Old Girl

The man's bail was set Wednesday at $500,000.

A 20-year-old Woodridge man has been accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, officials say.

Paul Darrah, a spokesperson for the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, said Jose Chagala, 20, of 2600 Forest Avenue, was arrested Tuesday and charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Darrah said Chagala worked as a maintenance man in the apartment complex where the girl lived and first saw her as she would walk to school. He gave her gifts of jewelry and perfume, Darrah said.

Kate Croteau, management analyst of the Woodridge Police Department, said local officers assisted with the man's arrest. However, the DuPage County Children's Center, part of the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, took the lead in the investigation.

Cathy Skinner, assistant superintendent of personnel at Woodridge School District 68, said she had not heard of the incident. There is no indication the girl attended school in Woodridge.

Darrah said Chagala's bail was set for $500,000 Wednesday morning and he had not yet posted bond as of late Wednesday afternoon. His arraignment has been scheduled for Jan. 31. If convicted, he could spend six to 30 years in jail.

Editor's note: The article previously listed the name of the man arrested as Jose Chalaga. The man's name is Jose Chagala. Woodridge Patch regrets the error.
