DuPage Symphony Concludes 60th Anniversary Season With "Diamond Treasures"

The DuPage Symphony Orchestra concludes its 60th Anniversary Season with “Diamond Treasures”, a concert featuring a performance by the DSO 2014 Young Artist Audition winner, Katherine Gallagher of Naperville.  Music Director Barbara Schubert conducts the DuPage Symphony, honored by the Illinois Council of Orchestras as the 2013 Community Orchestra of the Year, in a performance at Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Avenue in Naperville, on Saturday, May 3 at 8:00 PM.

The DuPage Symphony’s final subscription concert of its 2013-2014 concert season opens with the colorful, characteristically Russian overture to Alexander Borodin’s operatic masterpiece, Prince Igor. Originally composed for solo voice in 1912, the Vocalise of Sergei Rachmaninoff in the composer’s own 1929 orchestration follows.

The first half of the program concludes with the Rondo movement from the Symphonie Espagnole of Édouard Lalo, performed by the first prize winner of the 2014 DuPage Symphony Young Artist Audition, violinist Katherine Gallagher of Naperville. Ms. Gallagher, 17, is the Marlou and Kenneth Johnston Fellow at the Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago, a training center for gifted pre-college musicians, where she studies with artist faculty member Almita Vamos. Ms. Gallagher is a two-time winner of Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition, and her many additional honors include prizes in the Elmhurst Symphony’s Stanger Competition, West Suburban Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition, and the DePaul University Concerto Competition.

The program culminates with one of the most resplendent symphonies in the entire orchestral canon: the emotionally charged, indulgently romantic Symphony No. 2 in E minor of Sergei Rachmaninoff – a truly magnificent musical essay filled with poignant melodies, luxuriant harmonies, enthralling rhythms, and sweeping phrases.

Tickets for the May 3 performance by the DuPage Symphony are $35 balcony/$30 main floor for adults, $31 balcony/$26 main floor for seniors (65+), and $17 balcony/$12 main floor for students.  Tickets can be purchased by calling the North Central College Box Office at 630.637.SHOW (7469) or online at www.dupagesymphony.org.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2013-2014, the DuPage Symphony is a 90-member ensemble of talented area musicians dedicated to the orchestra’s mission of “Surrounding Our Community With Music”.  The DSO presents a season of five subscription programs and a family holiday concert at Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville, a series of intimate chamber music concerts in Wheaton and Lombard, and outreach performances throughout DuPage County.  For more information, call the DSO office at 630.778.1003 or visit the orchestra’s web site at www.dupagesymphony.org.
