Literacy DuPage and Woodridge School District 68 Announce New Partnership

Literacy DuPage, a non-profit organization that provides one-on-one English literacy tutoring to adult learners, and Woodridge School District 68 are pleased to announce the launch of their new collaborative partnership.

The partnership, a natural fit for both organizations, helps bolster District 68’s mission to “provide a comprehensive educational foundation for all children” by offering literacy instruction to parents and adult family members.  District 68 will focus on helping to identify and refer adult learners in the District to Literacy DuPage, who will then test and register them into its program.  “Studies show that a student's success at school is correlated with the literacy and involvement of the parent.  We are looking forward to working with Literacy DuPage to assist and engage our non-English speaking students and their families,” said Amy Melinder, Director of Community Engagement, Woodridge School District 68.

Additionally, District 68 and Literacy DuPage will work together to increase community awareness and publicize the upcoming tutor training series with the objective of attracting new tutors to the program.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with District 68 to improve the literacy skills of adult learners in the community for the ultimate benefit of the district.  One of our most effective messages to people considering tutoring with us has been ‘Teach a Parent - Reach a Child,’“ said Bernie Steiger, Executive Director of Literacy DuPage.

Tutors need have no previous teaching background, receive 18 hours of free training, establish their tutoring times and locations based on their availability, and are fully supported at all times by trained Literacy DuPage staff.  Tutor training will take place at the Woodridge Public Library from 6:00-9:00pm on the following dates:  October 23rd, 28th and 30th, November 4th, 6th and 25th. To register for the training, please call Literacy DuPage at (630) 416-6699 or visit www.literacydupage.org.
