Woodridge Rotary Triathlon a Success

The 14th Annual Woodridge Rotary Mini Triathlon, Chicagoland’s largest mini triathlon, took place on a warm and sunny Sunday, August 18.  780 participants swam, biked and ran through Woodridge’s Cypress Cove Aquatic Park and then through the streets of the town to complete the event.

This was the first year participants in Woodridge were allowed to designate to which of six charitable organizations $5 of their registration fee went.  Last week representatives from the organizations met at Cypress Cove to receive their funds from current Rotary Club President Debbie Mascitti and Race Director Mike Adams.

The groups and the dollar amounts which they received from this year’s Mini Triathlon are as follows: Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation, $1,420; Family Shelter Services, $960; West Suburban Community Pantry, $615; Dupage Habitat for Humanity, $585; Seaspar, $385; and the Woodridge Community Resource Center, $205.

Funds from the mini triathlon, the Woodridge Rotary Club’s main fundraiser, have always gone back to social service organizations helping those in Woodridge who need assistance.  Last year’s mini triathlon allowed the Club to award $26,000 to various organizations. This year’s funds will be given out in the months ahead.

Some fun facts about the event: More women than men participated (54% to 46%; the top five Illinois towns with people registered were Woodridge (125), Downers Grove (93), Chicago (40), Naperville (38), Darien (27), and Bolingbrook (25).  Out of state registrants came from Iowa, Missouri, Florida, Michigan, and Indiana. Three of the women participants were in the 70-74 year-old group, and one male was in the 75-79 year-old group.

99.4% of those who returned their surveys were satisfied or extremely satisfied with the event which takes the efforts of over 100 volunteers to run.  The Woodridge Rotary Mini Triathlon has grown from 65 people in its first year into a well-received local event.

The motto of Rotary is Service Above Self, and the Woodridge Rotary Club has been living this motto since it was organized in 1989.  Meetings are on Tuesdays at noon at Seven Bridges Golf Club, 1 Mulligan Drive, Woodridge.  Call 630-987-2549 for more information.
