Downers Grove North Dance Team Joins Breast Cancer Fight at Komen Race for the Cure

The Athenas dance team participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday, Sept. 23, at Yorktown Mall in Lombard.

The Downers Grove North Athenas dance team joined the fight against breast cancer last month, volunteering at the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

The varsity and junior varsity teams joined thousands of runners and walkers at the event, held Sept. 23 at Yorktown Mall in Lombard.

"The girls had an amazing time at Komen for the Cure," said Jennifer Isaacson, head coach of the Athenas. "It was an inspiring experience for everyone."

Isaacson said she signed up her team for the event to teach them the importance of giving back.

"Obviously my job is teach them to dance, but it's also my job to teach them to be good people who do things for their school and community," Isaacson said. "I couldn't think of a better organization or event for them to get involved with."

During the race, the Athenas made their way onto the main stage to dance for the walkers and survivors, an experience Isaacson said she'll remember forever.

"It was just awesome to see them dance and motivate everyone who was particapting that day," she said.

The Downers Grove North Athenas dance team was formed with the mission of contributing to school spirit within the student body, and to achieve high standards of showmanship through competition and entertainment at school and community events. There are 36 girls on the varsity and junior varsity squads, both of which perform at all home basketball and football games, and host dance camps twice per year for elementary and middle school children.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1982 in memory of Susan Komen, a Peoria native who died of breast cancer at age 36. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation.

Today, Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion over the past 30 years.

The Chicagoland affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was established in 1997, and held the first Susan G. Komen Chicago Race for the Cure.

Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds raised by the Affiliate are dedicated to fighting breast cancer locally in the Chicagoland metropolitan area. The remaining 25 percent of net proceeds raised are contributed to the Komen Grants Program which funds breast cancer research and education programs.
