Tribune Photo Gallery Captures Some Woodridge/Darien History

Seventeen images ranging from 1963-1992 capture "some memorable moments" from the history of the Village and the City.

In a nifty 17-image slideshow, the Chicago Tribune is showing off a little slice of Darien and Woodridge history this week, starting with an image from 1963 of a proposed country club in Woodridge and going through the 1992 10th-anniversary celebration of the Hinsdale South’s baseball team’s 1982 state championship.

For some reason, there’s a whole bunch of photos from around 1990: a teacher’s strike in District 61, the 375-year-old old Singing Tree, construction at Darienfest 1990 and more. Other highlights: a new-in-1971 public works building at 83rd and Leawood, Darien’s Carmelite Carefree Center in 1971 and an emotionally charged 1986 meeting after a Fairview School aide was arrested on child pornography charges.

“While both [Woodridge and Darien] came from humble beginnings, post World War II suburban expansion helped propel their combined population to 55,000 residents,” the Trib writes. “Take a look at some memorable moments from the past [here.]”
