Toni Patisserie & Cafe: Bites Nearby

Bakery in downtown Hinsdale tempts customers with sweet offerings.

If you’re a connoisseur of baked goods, then certainly a trip to  must be added to your bucket list.

The extra calories may require a longer workout or counting calories for days. But you will undoubtedly think it's worth it when you're greeted by tantalizing smells and visions of decorated bakery so perfect they look fake.

Toni’s opened on Washington Street in downtown Hinsdale in 1994, and its success led to the summer opening of a second location on a different Washington Street in Chicago near Millennium Park.

The mission of the quaint European-style bakery and cafe is to “bring the sweet and savory art of celebration to everyday life.”

Owner Toni Marie Cox received a BA in fine arts and then went on to culinary school. She spent three years in France, and her creations were requested by Disney at the opening of The Disneyland Hotel, Paris.

Cox’s background seems to be the perfect recipe for her success.

Although her various quiche selections, ham and Swiss baguette sandwich and goat cheese paninis have garnered rave reviews, it’s the sweets that take front and center.

Last month, Crain’s Chicago Business published its appraisal of Toni’s creations, describing the sweets as “gems arrayed like gems inside gleaming glass cases.”

The Crain’s article joins a host of media and clients who have posted high praise for all of the bakeries offerings.

Toni’s signature White Chocolate Mousse Cake was rated “the best in town” by Inside Chicago.

The menu’s description of the item leaves nothing to be desired, except perhaps a 4,000 daily calorie allowance: three layers of French-style vanilla sponge filled with two layers of white chocolate mousse, masked with whipped cream frosting, finished with white chocolate shavings and served with raspberry sauce.

A flourless chocolate or carrot cake might seem appealing instead for an everyday or special occasion. Toni’s wedding cakes have appeared on the covers of The Wedding Guide.

If you’re looking for smaller fare, how about eclairs, fresh fruit tarts, mousse cups, lemon squares, petit fours, chocolate-dipped strawberries, raspberry meringues, marjolaine or cheesecakes?

Customers can also have custom-shaped and decorated cookies made to order.

Regular cookie selections include Linzer, shortbread, chocolate chip walnut oat, macaroons, and favorites such as sugar and chocolate chip.

The only thing you might not be able to find within the sweet walls of Toni’s is restraint.
