Library Recommended: Scary Books for Adults
Two Woodridge librarians give us their picks for scary books for adults -- if you can handle it.
We asked Brenda O'Brien and Denise Murray to recommend some great scary books for adults. Just in time for Halloween, they shared their picks and a bit of commentary as well:
The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks
Written as if it was real. Sometimes funny, sometimes scary, always hard to put down. This is the only book that's ever given me nightmares. It's meant to be funny but when you read it, you'll start seeing just how vulnerable you are. It's really fun to scare yourself and others with that.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks
The audio version is great.

The Strain by Guillermo del Toro
First book in a trilogy about a vampire virus and the people who try to fight it. These vampires are scary and dangerous, not pretty and friendly like some are these days.
Fragile Things and Smoke & Mirrors by Neil Gaiman
Both are short story collections with plenty of spooky stories perfect for the season.
Horns by Joe Hill
A man wakes up with horns and the devilish powers to go with them.
The Walking Dead graphic novels by Robert Kirkman
Great, gory, scary reads that are perfect for reading in chunks or holing up somewhere safe and digesting them all. They're the basis of the TV series.
13 Bullets by David Wellington
First in a series. All the suspense and horror of a great scary movie but with likable characters and a realistic setting.
