AAUW Jane Addams Branch to Host Dynamic Math and Science Program for Girls

The AAUW Jane Addams Branch, a chapter of the
American Association of University Women, will host Tech Savvy, a local,
one-day program at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Rice Campus in
Wheaton on Saturday May 10th from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

This one-day program will introduce sixth-to-ninth-grade
girls to many types of careers in science, technology, engineering, and math
(STEM), and will teach “savvy skills” such as negotiation and public speaking.  Hands-on workshops in STEM, including working
with robots, candy, ice cream, music, or the weather, will be held in the
morning so that girls can meet role models and learn about careers and STEM
principles.  College Corner will help
girls begin to prepare for college.  The
afternoon will include Savvy Skills workshops to help build college and life
skills.

Mothers and mentors are encouraged to attend the Tech Savvy one-day program for
adults. Information will be provided on financing a college education, as well
as the importance of STEM education and how to continue to support girls after
Tech Savvy.

The non-refundable registration fee is $5.00 for each adult
and child that attends Tech Savvy.  The
registration fee covers breakfast and lunch for each attendee, and T-shirts for
girls to wear during the conference.

AAUW is expanding Tech Savvy to ten cities throughout the
country with generous support from the Praxair
Foundation
.  Tech Savvy
received national recognition from the White House in 2011, when Praxair’s
Leader of Community Engagement and founder of the program, Tamara Brown, was
named as a White House Champion of Change. Tamara Brown will welcome the girls
and their parents at the Tech Savvy conference on May 10th at IIT in Wheaton.
