Court Watch: Naperville North Sex Abuse Case

Elmhurst:
The Elmhurst man convicted last month on 15 counts of possessing child pornography was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender. Paul F. Murphy was arrested last year after an investigation turned up hundreds of pornographic images on computer files and DVDs in Murphy's apartment. He was also ordered to serve 180 days in DuPage County Jail, but was credited with 326 days he had already served.

Downers Grove/Lisle:
John C. Campbell, accused of pretending to be a federal agent, pleaded not guilty Jan. 9 to forgery and multiple counts of impersonating an officer. Campbell was arrested in November after telling a Lisle police officer and a bank employee he was a U.S. Marshal, according to prosecutors, who also said Campbell made similar claims as he forged paperwork to buy a vehicle. Campbell is also wanted on a probation violation related to a robbery in Broward County, Fla., court records show. The warrant states Campbell failed to report to a probation officer after his September 2010 release from custody. He is described in the warrant as having a "history of violence," documents state. Campbell returns to court next month.

Hinsdale/Wheaton:
A grand jury has indicted a Wheaton man accused of stealing nearly $8,000 in jewelry from a Wheaton home in November. Garner is charged with theft and two counts of residential burglary. Police tracked down Garner after he reportedly sold the stolen items at suburban pawn shops. He remains held in DuPage County Jail on $50,000 bail. The items were taken during a party Garner was not invited to attend.

Naperville:
The judge in the sexual abuse case of a former Naperville North High School counselor has ordered the school district to release student records of two female students, including one described by prosecutors as John Carbonaro's victim. Judge Blanche Fawell directed the records to be sent to her for inspection before handing them over to anyone involved in the case. She also told the district to inform the girls' parents of their rights to inspect the information and to object to the records being shared with Carbonaro's attorney. Prosecutors have objected to their release based on privacy, but also because they contend it is a "fishing expedition" by the defense. Fawell also said she will inspect Facebook account information subpoenaed by Carbonaro's attorney. The case resumes on Feb. 6.
