Woodridge Man Charged with Beating Dad to Death Showing Mental Improvement

Yashesh Desai has received treatment since December after he was deemed unfit for trial.

A 22-year-old man charged with beating his father to death with a weed trimmer is showing mental and physical improvement while in treatment at an Illinois Department of Human Services facility, according to officials. 

, Sanjiv Desai, Aug. 14 by beating him in the head with a weed trimmer. He was indicted Sept. 8 with five counts of first degree murder. 

Desai was also charged with aggravated battery after officials said . The September battery charges came after Desai resisted leaving his "feces-smeared cell" when it needed to be cleaned, punching and scratching a sheriff's sergeant, officials said.

Judge Robert Kleeman deemed Desai unfit for trial in November, citing psychiatric reports and testimony that said Desai is experiencing “psychotic episodes” and showing “bizarre” behaviors.

Desai was sent to a secured downstate Illinois Department of Health Services facility for treatment with a goal of restoring his fitness within a year.

Desai "continues to show improvement mentally, physically and functionally," according to court records. Attorneys will return to court in July for another update on Desai's condition.
