Sheriff's Office Seizes Million Dollars of Synthetic Cannabis and Bath Salts in Lombard

The Woodridge village board passed an ordinance banning these substances in the community on Dec. 15.

Two men were arrested after a million dollars of synthetic marijuana and bath salts, drug paraphernalia and cash were seized from a business in unincorporated Lombard Dec. 15.

This was the first search warrant issued for these types of substances in DuPage County after they became illegal in July, according to a DuPage County Sheriff's Office press release.

The village board passed an ordinance last month banning the sale, delivery, possession and use of synthetic alternative drugs in the community.

The Lombard incident took place at Sergio's Discount Smoke Shop, 21 W 500 North Ave.

Synethetic marijuana (K2, Spice and Red Magic, the release said) and bath salts (Charley Sheene and Ultra), drug paraphernalia and more than $5,000 in cash was seized from the smoke shop.

Business operations were shut down after the seizure.

George Rantis, 49, of St. Charles, and Sergio Delcid, 46, of Chicago, was both arrested and charged with one count of manufacture and deliver a controlled substance over 200 grams, a Class X felony.

Rantis is the owner of Sergio's Smoke Shop; Delcid is the manager.

“These newer substances pose a significant threat to the health and well being of the youths in our community” Sheriff Zaruba said in the release. “We will continue to aggressively fight to keep these substances and all narcotics illegal or prescriptions out of the hands of our children,” he continued.

Rantis & Delcid were booked into the DuPage County Jail and were released after posting 10 percent of their $100,000 bonds.
