A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty last week to having sex with an 11-year-old girl.
arrested Jose Chagala in Jan. 2011 after an investigation revealed he had sexually assaulted the girl in late 2010, according to court records. Police said Chagala worked as a maintenance man in the apartment complex where the girl lived.
He reportedly became familiar with the girl after seeing her walk from school. At some point, he offered the girl gifts, police previously said.
During a Jan. 12 hearing, Chagala pleaded guilty to one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. Prosecutors dropped two other charges against Chagala as part of the plea agreement. Chagala will serve approximately 12 years, based on sentencing guidelines, and was credited for time served in DuPage County Jail since his arrest a year ago.
Chagala also must register as a sex offender and provide DNA to state officials. He remains in the jail awaiting transfer to the Illinois Department of Corrections.
