Woodridge Police Chief Announces Retirement

Herron has served as chief of police for the past eight years and has served with the Woodridge Police Department for the past 38 years.

Chief of Police Steve Herron announced his retirement from the Monday, according to a village press release. 

Herron has served as a member of the department for 38 years and has served as chief of police for eight years. 

His last day will be Nov. 11. There was no information in the release regarding who would replace him.

"Woodridge IL – On Monday, October 10th, Chief of Police, Steve Herron announced his retirement from the Woodridge Police Department.

Chief Herron has been a member of the Police Department for 38 years. Chief Herron started his career as a volunteer Cadet in 1973 and later that year was hired as a Dispatcher. It was in 1977 when Chief Herron was hired as a police officer for the village.

During his career, Chief Herron served in many roles. He was a Tactical Officer, Technical Services Officer, Field Training and the Village’s first Canine Handler, to name a few. In 1991, Chief Herron was promoted to Sergeant, where he served as a Watch Commander and Community Policing Sergeant.  In 1997, Chief Herron was appointed to Deputy Chief where he has served as both the Deputy Chief of Support Services and Patrol Divisions. In January 2004, Chief Herron was appointed as the Chief of Police and has served for almost the past eight years.

'Chief Herron’s leadership has guided the Police Department through many significant changes. His dedication to the department and the Police profession has been immense,' said Mayor William F. Murphy. He is an example for every officer through his dedication to both the Police Department and the Community, he said.   

Chief Herron’s last day will be November 11, 2011. He plans to remain involved in the community and work with organizations within the County. Then as time permits, he will relax and spend time with his family."
