DuPage County Hosting Mortgage Relief Program Aug. 25

Those facing foreclosure or hoping to avoid it may learn more about the Illinois Hardest Hit program during a free Mortgage Relief event being held in DuPage County.

Homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage or who are at risk of foreclosure, may want to attend an upcoming event that will provide tips on refinancing, avoiding foreclosure and more.

The free Mortgage Relief Event will be held Aug. 25 at the DuPage County Government Center Auditorium. DuPage County is hosting the event.

More than 6,400 foreclosures are pending in DuPage County and an average of 500 new cases are filed each month, Debra Olson, executive director of the DuPage Homeownership Center in Wheaton said in a news release issued by the county.

The DuPage Homeownership Center is a non-profit agency providing comprehensive housing counseling and financial literacy services for DuPage residents. The organization will be on hand during the event to assist homeowners, according to the county.

“The sluggish economy has taken a toll on families,” Olson said in the news release. “Over 65 percent of homeowners who come to us for help have defaulted on their loans because they are either unemployed or underemployed. The DuPage Homeownership Center can help homeowners cut through the red tape of their mortgage lenders and provide assistance in a variety of programs such as Illinois Hardest Hit, mortgage modification and forbearance.”
