DGS Senior Named National Achievement Semifinalist

DGS senior Cater Minnis was one of 1,600 students named semifinalists nationally.

Senior Cater Minnis is a semifinalist in the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding Black American high school students.

The academic achievement program is based in part on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Of the approximately 170,000 students who entered the program, about 1,600 have been named as semifinalists. In late February, the list will be narrowed to a finalists group.

“We are proud of Cater’s accomplishments and successes, and know he has a bright future ahead of him,” said South High Principal Steve Bild in a press release.

About 80 percent of the semifinalists go on to be finalists, and more than half receive an Achievement Scholarship Award.

To advance to the finalist level in the competition, Minnis must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, write an essay and submit his SAT scores. He will also need to complete a scholarship application with information about his participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities and educational goals.
