Bus service wasn't perfect for Tuesday morning, but it was improved, according to district officials.

There were still missed pick-ups and late buses, but "much fewer than in prior days," said Kevin Wegner, assistant superintendent of business for the district.

For instance, one bus driver was lost coming from a high school and arrived at at 8:30 a.m., 20 minutes after school had started.

But that was an improvement over Monday, when 10 of the 12 bus routes brought students to school that late and one bus never showed at all.

Wegner said he communicated the missed stops to Westway Coach, Inc., which has put them on a hot list to make sure drivers don't miss them again.

While changes have been made to some schools' bus schedules, there were not as many as Wegner anticipated. Changes had been made to routes at and because buses were scheduled to arrive at school too late.

Willow Creek routes scheduled buses to get to school at 8:15 a.m. The district wanted buses to get there at 8:05 a.m. instead and timing was changed accordingly.

Any changes in pick-up or drop-off times will be sent home with students Tuesday.

Wegner and Greg Wolcott, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, rode two District 68 routes Tuesday morning to assist drivers. Custodians and a reading specialist from the district also rode along with some routes.

Wegner said someone was on all of the kindergarten routes but the district had not decided whether to put personnel on afternoon bus routes. He expected personnel to ride along at least one more day to help drivers get comfortable with directions.

The will continue running a bus to pick up students left behind, and and other officials have kept an eye out for students waiting to be picked up, as well.
