Downers Grove North Students Put on Black History Fashion Show

From traditional African clothing to the present-day, Downers Grove North High School students modeled outfits inspired by black history during school Wednesday.

Each year, asks students for ideas to honor Black History Month. 

For senior Mahagani Watson, it was time for a fashion show. 

"Fashion plays a big role," Watson said. "No matter what era you live in, you need to wear something. I thought it was a creative way to do it."

A group of students researched time periods important to black history and those with a distinctive style to highlight, including the 1920's, 50's, 60's, 80's, 90's and present day.

"We came a long way," said sophomore Chani McClendon.

They split into groups, shopped for outfits and wrote the narration for the show. They put on the fashion show during North's six lunch periods on Wednesday. 

Factory Modeling helped the girls practice runway modeling during an afternoon session. Akira advised the girls on how to set up the fashion show and donated the present day outfit.
