Melissa Love, Meadowview’s LRC Director, and Violeta R. Gamez, ESL Teacher, wanted to develop a reading program to encourage students to read for enjoyment. They were also looking for ways to encourage parents to read with their children. After tossing around a few ideas, they came up with the Parent/Child Book Club.

The first book selected was James and the Giant Peach (James y el melocotón gigante). A kick-off meeting was held in October to distribute the books. Also distributed was a list of discussion questions (in both English and Spanish) that participants might think about while reading.

In November, 12 children and their parents returned to Meadowview’s LRC for a discussion on the book and a few fun extension activities, like making dirt cups to eat (pudding, crushed Oreosand gummy worms) and writing about their favorite characters.

Students recommended book titles for the next book club and Esperanza Rising (Esperanzarenance) will be read in January.
