North High School Teacher Named “Law Educator of the Year”

Janet Emond was chosen by Street Law, Inc., for demonstrating excellence and devotion to teaching law-related subjects.

Among teachers nationwide, North High School Social Studies Teacher Janet Emond has been named "Law Educator of the Year" by Street Law, Inc., for demonstrating excellence and devotion to teaching law-related subjects.

Street Law is a Maryland-based nonprofit organization that provides practical education about law, democracy and human rights. Emond will be recognized at an awards dinner in Washington D.C. on April 13.

“It is an honor to be named ‘Law Educator of the Year,’” says Emond. “Teaching law-related subjects to students is rewarding, and even more so when students are inspired to eventually pursue careers in law-related professions, including federal agents, lawyers and police officers.”

Emond was commended by Street Law for her efforts in fostering a highly participatory classroom environment.

Her classes include mock legal proceedings, group projects and field trips, including visits to the county courthouse where students observe live court cases. She has also established relationships with local legal professionals who serve as frequent guest speakers and resources for students. FBI agents, ATF agents, defense attorneys, family law attorneys, criminal psychiatrists and other legal experts have been included in her lesson plans.
