All of the students ran for 20 minutes Friday as part of the annual fundraiser for Willow Creek Elementary School.

Most every student in and some of the staff participated in the school's annual Fun Run Friday.

Students run or walk outside for 20 minutes. For each lap they finish, they receive a straw. Six laps equals one mile.

Eight laps was the high for kindergarten. Sixth-graders Andrew Shelly and Wyatt Andreuccetti each ran 18 laps (3 miles), the high for their grade. Madison Chudzik was the top sixth-grade female finisher with 16 laps.

It's great exercise for the kids, and it's also a major fundraiser for the school.

Students receive pledge sheets weeks before the run. Parents, family members, friends and others can pledge money per lap the student finishes or pledge a full amount. The students collect the donations following the run.

The run raises about $4,000 for the school each year, according to Lisa D'Ambrose, Fun Run Chair.

That money goes to fund field trips, assemblies, the Leading to Reading program and physical education equipment.

About 50 parents volunteer to run the event, D'Ambrose said.

All students are entered into a raffle to win a prize. Prizes are also awarded to the students with the most pledges, the students running the farthest and the top class.

The top class wins an extra physical education class.
