VIDEO: Jefferson Students Compete in Dance Contest

Ten couples competed in the waltz, cha-cha, tango and swing Thursday in the school's annual contest.

The gym looked a little more like Dancing with the Stars Thursday.

Ten couples, chosen from Jefferson's seventh- and eighth-grade P.E. classes, competed in the waltz, cha-cha, tango and swing. The annual competition is the culmination of the school's ballroom dancing unit.

Dozens of other students are also chosen to perform several line dances during the assembly while judges' results are tabulated.

Leah Rogoz and Tyler Korous took first place in the competition. Esther Mitre and Roemello Velez took second and Greta Galeckaite and Brayden Doan took third.

Physical Education Teacher Gail Hartig said this year's dancers were the best the school had ever seen. They looked at YouTube, talked with friends and worked with one another to develop new moves not taught during school, she said.
