Are You Digging These High School Volleyball Rankings?

Benet rates nod over East Suburban Catholic rival JCA for No. 1 spot in weekly poll; Lemont has talent to make run in state playoffs.

1.    Benet (16-4): Grace Giradot had 14 kills in the Redwings' 25-10, 25-18 victory over Providence Catholic on Thursday. Lara Ontko added seven kills. Virginia Tech recruit Jenna Jendryk chipped in six kills. Benet concludes play at the Marian Catholic Tournament Tuesday, and then faces Marist on Wednesday.

2.    Joliet Catholic Academy (16-3): Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Reardon stepped to the fore with five kills and one stuff block in the third game of the Angels' 25-18, 29-31, 25-22 victory over Wheaton St. Francis in the 11th-place match at the Asics Challenge. The two perennial powers met for the fifth time in five years and the first time in regular-season play. JCA took a 3-2 lead in the series. Senior middle Lainey Wyman tops the Angels with 118 kills, 60 blocks and 26 aces.

3.    Lemont (17-7): Senior outside hitter Courtney Keefe leads Indians with 158 kills in 48 games. Her loyal fans hang "K's" in the gym at Lemont to mark her "strikeouts." Teammate Vicki Wrobel runs the show for the Indians. She has 486 assists and 34 service aces. Lemont plays at Tinley Park on Tuesday and at Hillcrest on Thursday.

4.    Waubonsie Valley (18-8): Warriors follow the lead of their stat leaders—Martha Stewart (kills), Meagan Mooney (assists), Ally Simmons (blocks) and Jill Galovic (digs). And, don't forget the inspiration math teacher and coach Kristen Stuart provides. "The only angle from which to approach a problem is the TRY-angle," she says.

5.    Neuqua Valley (16-4): Wildcats are 10-0 in regular-season play, 6-4 in tournaments; they face South Elgin Tuesday, Hinsdale South Wednesday, then gear up for 24-team Mizuno Cup competition Friday and Saturday at Great Lakes Center in Aurora.
