Athlete Of The Week: Jessie Tulacka

Downers Grove North senior Jessie Tulacka led the volleyball team -- almost singlehandedly at times -- to an exciting win over Naperville Central in their home opener Tuesday.

Downers Grove North senior Jessie Tulacka is a force when it comes to volleyball. When she’s not hitting explosive spikes or playing defense, she's a vocal leader for her team -- talking to her teammates and keeping them motivated. At 6-foot-1 she is a physical, commanding presence that demands—and receives—respect from the opponent.

Throughout the match against Naperville Central, especially in the crucial third game, the Redhawks tried their best to keep the ball away from Tulacka after she burned them with four kills in the final moments of Game 2. Her excellent all-around performance with a game-high 20 kills in a rousing home-opening victory makes Tulacka, who will be attending Bradley next year, the athlete of the week.

What’s your favorite subject in school? “Gym (laughs). I don’t really like sitting behind a desk all day.”

Last book/movie you really enjoyed? “I re-read the Harry Potter books and I saw the last movie. It was amazing.”

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not playing volleyball? “I really like photography, actually. It’s fun.”

Maybe something you’d like to do for a career? “Maybe something on the side. I haven’t really decided what I want to be or what I want to do for a living.”

How far do you think your team can go this year? “I definitely think we can go farther than last year (lost in the regionals to Naperville Central). If we put our heads together we can really go a long way this year.”
