DGS Girls Cross Country Sectional Champs, Headed to State

The Downers Grove South High School girls cross country team is headed to the state championship meet for the first time in 10 years.

The girls cross country team is headed to state for the first time in a decade.

DGS took first out of 21 teams at Saturday's IHSA Sectional meet in Lockport. The win secured the Mustangs a berth in next Saturday's IHSA State Championship meet in Peoria.

DGS scored 68 points to place first, Lyons Township was second with 87 points, Lockport was third with 121 pounts, was fourth with 139 and Neuqua Valley was fifth with 161. 

The Mustangs were led by Freshman Amanda Thate's third place finish in a time of 18:31 over the very hilly 3.1 mile Dellwood Park course. Junior Katie Strelau  finished in 10th place with a time of 19:15.

Senior Jacquelyn Thate was 14th with 19:27, Junior Jordyn Baylark-Rasul was 19th with 19:46, Junior Amy Rotunno was 22nd with 19:51, Senior Cara Wicklein was 27th with 20:02 and Junior Katrina Friedrich was 44th with 20:28.

The Sectional championship is the third in school history and the first since 1990.
