Jefferson Jr. High Teachers Narrowly Beat Students in Annual Braggin' Rights Game

The 10th annual Braggin' Rights Basketball Game pits teachers against members of the school's basketball teams.

The stands in the gym were packed to the rafters Thursday as students, parents and staff gathered to watch the 10th Annual Braggin' Rights Basketball game.

The first game pitted the 7th grade boys and girls teams versus the 8th grade boys and girls teams. The game featured two, 10-minutes halves. The girls faced off against each other in the first half, and at the half-time buzzer, the 8th grade girls team had a commanding 17-2 lead. The boys took over in the second half, and at the final buzzer, the 8th graders won 32-2.

"The Braggin' Rights game started because for several years in a row, the student-athletes had wanted to have one more game to prove they could beat the teachers," said Troy Johnson, coach of the boys basketball team. "It has now grown into one of the most anticipated events of the school year.  The bleachers are always packed for this classic showdown.

"We are always excited to prepare for the event mainly because of how excited the school gets about it.  Everything from the daily morning announcements, special t-shirts worn by the staff and students on game day, the special trophy presented to the winning team, has enhanced the game each and every year. Even teachers who don't play in the actual game will many times become cheerleaders for the teachers."

Jenny Adams, a member of the , was looking forward to taking the court against her teachers.

"I am very excited about the Bragging Rights Game," Adams said. "It is always so much fun and able to just goof around and have fun. I do think we could win but I have to say the teachers are looking pretty good this years, so we might have some competition."

Eighth grade varsity player Joe Carter was also ready for take on his teachers. "I have been excited for  the bragging rights game since last year's game," Carter said. "I totally think we can win. We are going to destroy them."

The women faculty played the girls varsity team in the first and third quarters, while the men faculty faced off against the boys varsity team in the  second and fourth quarters.
