It's a game that lives up to expectations every year. And it's a given that Downers Grove North's Carstens Field will be packed with students and fans Friday night for the annual showdown between the Trojans and the Mustangs.

Both teams head into this year's meeting with 1-2 records. Last Friday, the Mustangs throttled Leyden 41-0 for their first win in 2010 after suffering tough losses to Bolingbrook and state-ranked Glenbard West to open the season. Meanwhile, the Trojans are coming off a 20-14 loss last week to West Suburban Silver foe Lyons Township.

However, what's on paper record-wise usually doesn't factor into the outcome of this battle royale for city bragging rights. The Mustangs have defeated their crosstown rivals each of the past four seasons—a streak that Downers North, of course, is hoping to end Friday.

South has won six games over the past 10 years. Here's a look at each of those match-ups since 2000:

2000

Downers North 32, Downers South 20: The Mustangs simply couldn't contain Trojans quarterback Kyle Kleckner, who completed 16 of 20 attempts for 208 yards and accumulated 133 yards on the ground with three rushing TDs. Downers South's Jay Moore ran back a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to make it 26-21, but Erin Cobb's 1-yard TD run in the fourth put the game out of reach.

2001

Downers South 17, Downers North 7: Kris Coffee, one of the best placekickers to come out of either Downers Grove high school, connected on an 18-yard field goal with 2:12 remaining to give the Mustangs their margin of victory. The Mustangs and Trojans traded touchdowns in the first half, but Downers South went ahead to stay in the second quarter on sophomore Erick Newman's 1-yard touchdown run. Newman led all rushers with 106 yards. Downers South went on to capture the Class 8A state title in November.

2002

Downers South 20, Downers North 0: The Trojans were victims of the  defending Class 8A champs' fifth straight shutout of the season (through their first seven games of 2002) as Downers South held them to 104 yards of offense. Coffee nailed two field goals during the game—one a 40-yarder—while Newman rushed for 165 yards. Pat Sathissarat gave the Mustangs excellent field position by running back two punts for 61 and 30 yards, respectively.

2003

Downers North 35, Downers South 0: Downers North turned the tables on their crosstown rivals behind the arm and the legs of senior quarterback Tom Edwards, who threw two touchdown passes and ran for two additional scores. The Trojans held the Mustangs to 62 yards in total offense and remained undefeated at that point in the regular season with an 8-0 record. It marked the first Downers North vs. Downers South matchup for new Trojan head coach John Wander.

2004

Downers North 30, Downers South 15: Junior Garrett Edwards inherited brother Tom's old spot behind center and put on a show offensively—and defensively. Edwards passed for two touchdowns, ran for two more and intercepted two passes from his safety position on defense. The loss marked the first time since 1996 that Downers South had lost two consecutive games during a season. Later in the year, the Trojans gave the city of Downers Grove its second state football championship in four years as they won the Class 8A crown.

2005

Downers North 20, Downers South 14: By the time the Mustangs and Trojans faced off for their annual crosstown game in late October, both squads had already qualified for the 8A playoffs. Edwards, however, gave his team town bragging rights for the third year in a row, scoring all three Trojan touchdowns while piling up 190 yards rushing. His 39-yard touchdown run with 3:34 to go in the third quarter erased a 14-13 Mustang lead.

2006

Downers South 31, Downers North 14: Once again, both teams had secured playoff berths prior to meeting. This time, the Mustangs prevailed and snapped a three-game losing streak to Downers North in the process. Sean Enright, Downers South's QB, threw just eight times during the game, but completed six for 195 yards and four touchdowns. Mike Edwards was on the receiving end of two Enright TD passes–one of which covered 73 yards.

2007

Downers South 21, Downers North 7: Scottie Williams and Tyler West—each of whom didn't play the previous week—returned to spark the Mustangs. Williams carried the ball 21 times for a game-high 133 yards and a touchdown (a 56-yard scamper in the third quarter) while West scored touchdowns on runs of 5 and 29 yards. The victory enabled Downers South to get off to a 3-0 start in 2007.

2008

Downers South 21, Downers North 0: A steady downpour didn't slow down Williams, who continued to give the Trojans fits, running for 149 yards and scoring on a 42-yard run. The victory over Downers North was the Mustangs' first in 2008 following an 0-2 start. Reggie Miller returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown just minutes into the game, and the Mustangs' defense kept Downers North from scoring despite the Trojans advancing into the red zone five times.

2009

Downers South 37, Downers North 22: The Mustangs trailed 9-7 at intermission, but poured it on in the second half, scoring 16 unanswered points at one point. Ryan Oruche got the ball rolling for Downers South by returning the second-half kickoff 72 yards for a touchdown. Jason Jozaites grabbed five passes for 92 yards for the Mustangs, including a 26-yard TD pass from quarterback Chandler Whitmer. Courtney Greenwood piled up 172 yards rushing and scored a touchdown for the Trojans.
