Woodridge Rotary Club Collecting Coats for Homeless Veterans

From now until Oct. 22, the Woodridge Rotary Club is collecting gently used coats, gloves and scarves.

The Woodridge Rotary Club is collecting clean, gently used coats, gloves and scarves for homeless veterans from now until October 22. Coats will be distributed in November on what is traditionally known as "Stand Down Day."

Stand Downs were started by the Department of Veterans Affairs in an effort to provide services to homeless veterans in a concentrated period of time.  Homeless veterans are provided health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to other service agencies.

The first Stand Down was organized in 1988 in San Diego. In Woodridge, Collision Centers of America and Bess Mocek State Farm are coordinating collection efforts. The Woodridge VFW is also a partner in this effort, as are several of the Rotary Club members’ businesses and agencies.
