Built in 1964, South High School is one of two schools in Community High School District 99. It accepts students from Downers Grove, Woodridge, Darien and Bolingbrook. The school offers a variety of courses, including honors and Advanced Placement, and features cutting-edge science labs and fine arts facilities. The Class of 2009's average ACT composite score was 22.3, more than two points above the state average. More than three quarters of South students participate in extracurricular activities, including athletic teams, theater, music, publications, the school's award-winning speech team and dozens of other clubs. The South Mustangs compete in the West Suburban Conference. Comedian Emo Phillips and Bob Bryar of the band My Chemical Romance are noted alums.
