DGN Boys Gymnastics Takes Third at State

Downers Grove North had three students compete in events at the IHSA state meet.

The Downers Grove North boys gymnastics team took third in state Saturday.  DGN earned 155.35 points, placing after Wheaton Warrenville South (160.8 points) and Lincoln-Way East (157.45 points).  Downers Grove North won its sectional meet May 4, qualifying at least one student for state in each event: floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar and all-around.  DGN Junior John Schubert tied with two other gymnasts for third in the floor exercise finals. He also placed eighth in vault, 10th in parallel bars and 10th in horizontal bars. In the prelims, he took 20th in pommel horse. The top 10 gymnasts in the preliminary round move on to the final round of each event.  DGN Senior Luke Wychocki took sixth in …

Fund Set Up for Woodridge Family that Suffered House Fire

Find out how to donate to the Dobbertin Family Fund.

A fund has been set up to benefit a Woodridge family whose house caught fire May 4.  Anyone interested can donate money to the Dobbertin Family Fund at: Community Bank of Downers Grove 1111 Warren Avenue Downers Grove, IL 60515 A fire started in the attic of the family's home in the 3100 block of 63rd Street May 4, according to Lisle-Woodridge Fire Department officials.  One firefighter was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure and was later released, according to Bureau Chief Jim French. No other injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Summer Baseball Featuring College-age Players Starts in Lisle as Hounds Begin Inaugural Season

Downers Grove South Takes Second in Girls Track Sectionals

DGS takes 2nd, Downers Grove North took third at Thursday's track and field meet.

Downers Grove South took second and Downers Grove North took third at Thursday's girls track and field sectionals.  Bolingbrook High School took first with 117.5 points. DGS had 60; DGN had 56.  The two schools qualified girls in seven events for the IHSA state meet.  DGN Senior Tess Johnson took second in long jump and fifth in the triple jump. DGS Junior Jada Franklin took second in the triple jump. Downers Grove North took first in the 4x800-meter relay while Downers Grove South took second. Amanda Thate, Maddie Cahill, Jacquelyn Thate and Rebecca Stearns were part of the DGS relay team.  DGS Junior Katie Strelau took second in the 3,200-meter run. Downers Grove South Boys Tennis Takes WSC Gold Conference Title

The team had 10 WSC Gold conference champions.

The Downers Grove South boys tennis team has taken the WSC Gold conference title, again.  The Mustangs, (21-3, 7-0) came into the tournament holding 41 of the possible 42 points that could have been collected during the dual meet season, with lone point being lost due to injury. Seeded first in all seven flights, placed all 11 starters in the finals and came away with 10 WSC Gold Conference Champions. Champions included: Cody Freischlag, Ryan McMillian, Joey Leto, Connor Harmon, Lee Thornquist, Kiernan Cavangh, George Kozkin, Grant Jordan, Matt Schlitman and Alvin Wu. Woodridge Park District Moves Forward with Athletic Recreation Center

The park district board accepted the results of a final feasibility study Tuesday.

The Woodridge Park District is moving to the next of a multiple-step process to build an athletic recreation center in Woodridge.  The park district board accepted the results of a final feasibility study that was presented at the board's Tuesday meeting. According to the study, "the proposed facility can operate in a self-sufficient and profitable manner exclusive of debt service without any reliance on any subsidies from other existing park district funds," according to a park district release.  The park district board authorized staff to proceed with the next step in the process: assessing site location options. That includes soliciting "a proposal for the board to provide preliminary architectural/engineering consulting services to …

Jefferson Girls Soccer Team Ends Season 9-0

The girls took first in conference with an undefeated season.

The Jefferson Jr. High School girls soccer team ended their season undefeated Wednesday, defeating Eisenhower Jr. High School 3-0.  The team has also clinched the SDEAA conference championship. It was the first time in three years Jefferson topped its conference. The Wolverines tied for first place two years ago.  During the nine games played this year, Jefferson scored 54 goals and allowed only two. Simone Gardner and Lexi Dimovski each scored 22.  Coach Jennifer Riskus credits the team's success to the girls' flexibility.  "Everybody played well both in and out of position (this season)," Riskus said. "We had some injuries and had to move people around. I think everybody stepped up and played very well."  The soccer team is made up of …

Village Greens Sees 2 Hole-in-One's in 1 Day

Two golfers hit a hole-in-one Thursday at the Woodridge golf course.

Village Greens of Woodridge witnessed a rare feat Thursday -- two holes-in-one. Tom Miklasz of Naperville and Eddie Valencia of Cicero both scored a hole-n-one within minutes of each other, according to Village Greens. On the 117-yard 13th hole, Valencia used his Pitching Wedge and a top-flite ball to record his first ever ace, which was witnessed by his brother and two other playing companions. Miklasz, who already had two hole-n-ones to his credit, made his third on the 164-yard 4th hole using an eight-iron and a Bridgestone golf ball. Witnesses were Bob Zavala and Aaron Rigney. Jefferson Girls Soccer Team, Boys Volleyball Team Undefeated

See the Wolverines are doing in soccer, softball, volleyball, swimming and track and field.

From the track and field team recruiting more than 100 students to compete to undefeated girls soccer and boys volleyball teams, get a spring athletic update from Jefferson Jr. High School.  Girls Soccer: The Lady Wolverine Soccer Team is currently undefeated with a 6-0 record. The team has defeated Old Quarry, Lakeview, Butler, Gower, Westview Hills and Lisle. The girls are led by mid-fielder Grace Maletich and forwards Lexi Dimovski and Simone Gardner. Lexi and Simone have both scored over 15 goals each in their first 6 games. The girls soccer program is coached by Jen Riskus and Gail Hartig. Downers Grove South Girls Track & Field Wins 8th Straight Conference Championship

The team will compete in the IHSA sectional meet on Thursday.

The Downers Grove South girls track & field team took home a West Suburban Gold conference championship Friday.  It was the eighth straight conference championship for the team.  DGS was the clear winner with 169 points, crushing second-place Hinsdale South with 105 points. Willowbrook took third with 101 points. The West Suburban Gold conference consists of seven teams.  Senior Rebecca Stearns led the Mustang effort with three individual conference titles in 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and the 800-meter run. She also ran a leg on the winning 4x400-meter relay team.  The Mustangs came home first in both the 4x400-meter relay (Mueller, Clinnin, Raven Wilson, Stearns) and the 4X800-meter relay (Blake Mueller, Katrina Friedrich, Amy …
