The Woodridge Park District is asking for nominations for coach of the year. All nominees will be recognized.
A youth sports coach can have a special impact on a child, and the Woodridge Park District wants to recognize the best local coaches. "Coaching youth sports is more than just teaching the X’s and the O’s," A Park District news release stated. "Good sportsmanship, a positive attitude and self-discipline are expected by parents and nowadays expectations couldn’t be higher." The Park District wants to recognize the efforts of the volunteer coaches, and nominations are being accepted for any coach who participated during the 2012 calendar year. Senior Daniellle Conrad will play at University of St. Francis in Joliet this fall.
Danielle Conrad, a senior at South High School in Downers Grove, will signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to play volleyball at the University of St. Francis in Joliet in the fall. Conrad led South High in assists this season as a three-year varsity player and was a key asset to both the offense and defense. She was a co-captain this year and was a leader on and off the court in her commitment to being a student athlete. “It has been an honor to coach Danielle for her four years here at South High,” said Coach Trisha Kurth in a release. Both Downers Grove high schools have something to dance about. The Downers Grove North Athenas and Downers Grove South Fillies will both compete in the IHSA competitive dance state final Friday and Saturday after placing among the top 12 teams at the 3A sectional in Palatine on Jan. 19. The Fillies finished second in its group behind St. Charles North, with a score of 83.50. The Athenas finished sixth with a score of 75.50. Both teams are set to perform Saturday evening at the state finals competition. This year marks the first year competitive dance is recognized as an IHSA sport. Peter Freischlag will be recognized later this month by the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association.
The Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association (IHSTCA) has named Downers Grove South High School's boys tennis coach Peter Freischlag “Coach of the Year” for 2012. Freischlag, who is also a teacher in the special services department at South High, will be recognized later this month following his team's successful fall season, according to District 99 officials. Each year, the IHSTCA recognizes a coach based on team record, obstacles the team faced, contributions the coach made to the sport outside of the high school season and player development. A ceremony will be held Feb. 7 to welcome South High's newest Hall of Fame inductees.
Downers Grove South High School will welcome seven new members to its Athletic Hall of Fame next month, school officials announced Thursday. The inductees include three former athletes and two coaches—all of whom have made substantial contributions to South High's athletic programs. “We are pleased to honor these people for their athletic accomplishments and vast contributions to our programs,” said South High School Athletic Director Randall Konstans. “Each one of them has set an example for all of us and a foundation of athletic success at our school.” The inductees will be welcomed into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony Saturday, Feb. 9, at South High, 1436 Norfolk St. A social hour will be held at 4 p.m., followed by the sophomore …

Village and park district officials are scheduled to discuss a five-year plan and intergovernmental lease agreement for Village Greens of Woodridge golf course during the village board meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Woodridge Park District officials will present a five-year strategic plan to the village board Thursday, assessing the future viability of Village Greens of Woodridge golf course. The presentation will preface the finalization of a long-term lease agreement between the two governmental bodies. The agreement would permit continued management of the golf course by Woodridge Park District. The Woodridge Village Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Werch Board Room at Village Hall, located at 5 Plaza Drive. There are a lot of athletes from Chicago suburbs—and Patch towns—on some of the best teams in college football this season.
The BCS bowl season has begun, but two area schools will wait until after the new year to play in some of the most prestigious bowl games—and their rosters feature lots of area talent from Chicago suburbs and Patch towns. Notre Dame, the No. 1 team in the country, plays Alabama in the BCS National Championship game Jan. 7. And No. 15 Northern Illinois, a surprise BCS team, heads to the Orange Bowl to play No. 12 Florida State on New Year's Day. A number of athletes from Patch towns are on the rosters of these teams, as well as others playing in bowl games over the next few weeks.
