The American Cancer Society will host its annual kickoff party Wednesday for Relay For Life of Downers Grove/Woodridge. Festivities will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ballydoyle Pub, 5157 Main St. in Downers Grove. Friends, neighbors, cancer survivors, caregivers and anyone interested in learning more about Relay For Life are encouraged to attend. The kick-off event offers information about the American Cancer Society’s mission of saving lives faster by helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures and fighting back. William F. Murphy Elementary School students lapped the building Friday to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Every student at William F. Murphy Elementary School lapped the building Friday for an hour (or 30 minutes for the younger ones) to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Murphy School's Annual Cancer Walk began in 1999, after school psychologist Judy Davids lost her battle with breast cancer. Davids is remembered as "a professional who cared about others and about doing her very best for children," "an inspiration to her colleagues," "always an advocate for children and families," "a consummate collaborator." In a 1998 newsletter of "School Psychology in Illinois," a District 68 administrator wrote: "We have a better school district as a result of her dedication and leadership." Joan Ackerman, Donna Ciolek and Vicki Tuch, members of Ruth's Rugrats/Miles for Missy Partners Relay for Life Team, held their annual boutique fundraiser on Saturday Feb. 5. Proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society for research, education and prevention programs as part of a Relay for Life event from June 10 to 11. Relay for Life celebrates cancer survivors and remembers those lost to cancer. Boutique shoppers were treated to a festive setting and were provided with information on how they can become more actively involved with starting their own Relay teams.
