As if you needed an introduction, Nov. 23 marks one of the busiest shopping days of the year—Black Friday. The event often brings out the best and sometimes, the worst, in shoppers. Some have been known to wait in line for hours before the doors open—and blistering cold, biting winds or driving rain has proved no match for the avid Black Friday deal-hunter. So far this year, the National Weather Service is predicting mild weather. Thanksgiving night, there’s a chance of showers and mostly cloudy skies, with a low around 42. So, you just can't wait to get your Christmas 2012 gift-shopping groove on? You don't have to wait until Black Friday to get some great online deals. Best Buy's announcement that it will allow in-store customers to price-match online retailers by showing the price on their smartphones has been matched by Target and Super Target, according to BFAds.net, a website devoted to Black Friday and gift-shopping alerts. Among other online retailers, the stores will match prices of Amazon.com, Walmart.com,Toysrus.com and Babiesrus.com. The holiday shopping season traditionally has started around 6 a.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but by that hour this year, Target employees and those of other stores who braved an early morning shopping rush in Woodridge—and across the country— had already seen the end of a long shift. More than 90,000 people have signed a petition asking Target to open later. Would you go at midnight to shop?
Target's decision to open its doors at midnight on Thanksgiving has drawn plenty of attention this week. As of Tuesday at 4 p.m., almost 91,000 people have signed a petition at Change.org asking Target not to open at midnight on Thanksgiving as planned. The petition asks that Target open instead at 5 a.m. Friday to allow workers to spend more time with their families. Anthony Hardwick, an Omaha-based employee, started the petition. "With the midnight opening, employees like myself will have to leave for work right in the middle of Thanksgiving Dinner," Hardwick said in a statement. "We don't mind hard work, but cutting into our holidays is a step too far." Target employees have been asked to arrive at the store no later than 11 p.m. …

As a fellow retail employee we also follow what other stores are doing to be competitive. I think it is sad that these retail stores are opening so early on Thanksgiving Day. We only get two days off a year Thanksgiving and Christmas we would also like to spend time with our families. I hope that my store does not follow in this trend.
