After winning their home regional, Downers South will move on to the East Aurora Sectional next week.
Three Downers South seniors scored in double-digits as the Mustangs, behind a strong second-half shooting performance, beat Hinsdale Central 64-51 Friday night in the Downers South Boys Basketball Regional Championship. In their final home game as Mustangs, Kevin Honn scored 20 points, Jamall Millison tallied 17, and Jerron Wilbut chipped in 12 for Downers South (22-5). Senior center Greg Garro had nine points and nine rebounds. Downers South head coach Jay Baum commended his upperclassmen after the win. “To their credit, they’ve gotten better as the year’s gone on,” Baum said. Hinsdale Central (17-10) took a 22-14 lead mid-way through the second quarter before the Mustangs got hot. Downers South finished the second quarter on a 10-2 run …

The Downers Grove South boys basketball team came out on top in a close playoff game Tuesday night.
Watch highlights of Tuesday's game, courtesy of High School Cube. Downers Grove South had a thrilling playoff opener against Oswego East Tuesday night. Oswego East only led once -- briefly, and by one point, in the fourth quarter. But the Wolves kept fighting, at one point cutting a dougle-digit DGS lead to a tie. In the end, the Mustangs were able to hold them off, beating the Oswego 69-68. "We did just enough to win,” DGS coach Jay Baum told the Beacon-News. “We’re glad we survived. That would have been an upset. It would have been a rough day for Downers South (a Nov. 2 seed in the East Aurora Class 4A Sectional). If this was a 15 seed, I’d hate to see what the other teams look like.” Downers Grove South advances to the title game …

Visiting Pirates remain unbeaten as late rally by Mustangs falls short.
Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team beat Proviso East twice last season en route to winning the West Suburban Conference Gold Division championship. On Thursday, Proviso East exacted its revenge. The unbeaten Pirates demonstrated why they are ranked No. 2 in the Chicago area, leading from wire-to-wire in their 78-70 victory in Downers Grove. Proviso East (15-0, 5-0) raced out to a 12-2 lead, flustering the Mustangs with a full-court press and turning the game into a track meet in the early going. The visitors eventually led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter before Downers South (13-3, 4-1) made the score respectable in the closing minutes. So what was the difference from last year, when the Mustangs swept the season …

Sophomore point guard keys Downers South's blowout of Willowbrook.
Danny Spinuzza is only eight games into his varsity basketball career, but Downers Grove South coach Jay Baum has already paid him a huge compliment. "He’s an amazing point guard,” Baum said of the 5-10 sophomore. “I think he’s the next coming of Bryan Mullins. He’s got a long way to go before he’s Bryan, but he reminds me of him.” Mullins was the best point guard in school history, an All-Stater who went on to star at Southern Illinois and now plays pro ball in France. What prompted the comparison? Spinuzza’s steady play in the early going raised eyebrows, especially the fact that he’s gotten steadily better. Spinuzza had eight points, eight assists, four steals and three offensive rebounds to spark the Mustangs to an 86-41 demolition of …

Glenbard East 67, Downers Grove South 62. The 18-game DGS win streak comes to a halt thanks to Rams' dynamic duo of Hill and Miller.
AURORA – Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team entered Wednesday’s Class 4A East Aurora sectional semifinal game against Glenbard East not having lost a game since Dec. 18. The Mustangs were riding a 18-game winning streak and were hoping to continue that run to force a rematch with East Aurora, whom DGS beat in the season opener, for the sectional title. The veteran Rams had other ideas, however. Glenbard East’s Division I combo of Jon Hill (Illinois State) and Zach Miller (Northern Illinois), who call each other Batman (Hill) and Robin (Miller), scored 21 and 22 points respectively to hand the Mustangs a 67-62 loss and end their season at 25-4, one of the best seasons in program history. “I am very proud of our guys,” DGS coach Jay …

Sports Writer Paul Johnson ranks the top five teams in the region, plus a short list of the next best teams.
1. Benet Academy (27-0): Benet is the talk of the nation after taking down the state’s No. 1 team, Simeon on Saturday. The Redwings soared to No. 6 in the USA Today poll and No. 1 in the Midwest. They’ll take their perfect record into the postseason next week at the Naperville North Regional. 2. Downers Grove South (23-3): The Mustangs quietly will ride into the postseason in Benet’s shadow, not having lost a game since Dec. 18. They’ll ride a 16-game win streak into the West Aurora Regional next week. 3. East Aurora (20-5): The Tomcats have won five straight after a three-game hiccup and still have a non-conference tune-up with Batavia Friday before starting their postseason journey. East Aurora headlines the Bolingbrook Regional next …
