VFW Joins Rotary Club in Coat Drive for Homeless Veterans

The Woodridge VFW is also hosting an Oktoberfest fundraiser on October 19, at Shanahan's, where people can drop off coats for vets on October 20.

The Woodridge VFW is joining forces with the Rotary Club of Woodridge to collect gently used coats for homeless veterans. People can drop off coats at Shanahan's Food & Spirits on 75th Street in Woodridge. The VFW also will be holding an Oktoberfest fundraiser at Shanahan's on October 19, to raise money for the organization. Shanahan's owner, Richard Moore, said he was discussing options with the VFW's post commander, Bob Reichert, to help the organization raise funds. Moore, who is a past president of the Rotary Club of Woodridge, also wanted to help with the rotary's coat drive. "Reichert suggested that we use Shanahan's as a drop off area for the coat drive for homeless vets," said Moore in an email to Patch. Moore said he was looking …

Woodridge Rotary Club Collecting Coats for Homeless Veterans

From now until Oct. 22, the Woodridge Rotary Club is collecting gently used coats, gloves and scarves.

The Woodridge Rotary Club is collecting clean, gently used coats, gloves and scarves for homeless veterans from now until October 22. Coats will be distributed in November on what is traditionally known as "Stand Down Day." Stand Downs were started by the Department of Veterans Affairs in an effort to provide services to homeless veterans in a concentrated period of time.  Homeless veterans are provided health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling, and referrals to other service agencies. The first Stand Down was organized in 1988 in San Diego. In Woodridge, Collision Centers of America and Bess Mocek State Farm are coordinating collection efforts.
