When members of the 113th Congress take their seats in January, one of the top items on their agenda very well could be a new look at federal gun control laws. In the wake of the Newtown, CT, tragedy of one week ago today, President Obama on Wednesday set a January deadline for his administration to "create concrete proposals" to curb gun violence in the United States. Obama also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 to "pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips" and to "close a gun show loophole that allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check." Argonne National Laboratory, in partnership with the University of Chicago, received a $600,000 federal grant for a new research effort that will help decision-makers in urban areas better understand the impact of different policies on their communities. According to the University of Chicago, the population of the world's cities will nearly double over the next several decades. And there's much more data being collected to help optimize the operation of cities and anticipate the impact of their growth. The Argonne National Laboratory received a $120 million federal grant that could help slash dependence on foreign oil, U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) announced Thursday. Argonne, a non-profit research lab operated by the University of Chicago for the Department of Energy, will devote the grant to developing revolutionary battery technology for transportation and the electric grid, according to a news release from Lipinski's office. The federal funding will be delivered over five years and "has the potential of creating a revolution in battery technology that slashes dependence on foreign oil and makes our region the worldwide leader in battery manufacturing," the news release stated. It was a short evening for Democrat U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski who easily won his fifth congressional term in Illinois’s Third District. ABC-7 declared Lipinski the winner with 93-percent of precincts counted in Cook, Will and Dupage Counties. Lipinski throttled GOP challenger Richard L. Grabowski, capturing 68 percent of the vote. For all you anti gun people...we can charter a bus and drop you and your wife and kids off on the south side of Chicago for a four block walk through "the neighborhood"...a gun in a sealed envelope.
