Downers Grove South Rides a New Pony

Leach rises from third-string back to spotlight during fourth-rated Mustangs' charge to top of West Suburban Gold.

1.    Joliet Catholic Academy (8-1, 5-1): Defeated Benet 45-0 Thursday at Benedictine University. Well, it seems JCA was in a rush to get to the playoffs. The Hilltoppers rushed for 397 yards against Benet in their regular-season finale. Josh Ferguson led the way with 180 yards on 13 carries. He scored two touchdowns. Malin Jones and sophomore Tyler Reitz also enjoyed big nights running behind JCA's big 'O' line. Reitz rushed 72 yards on 10 carries and scored two TDs. Last week: JCA No. 1. 2.    Plainfield South (8-0, 6-0): Tonight at Plainfield North. The Cougars can win the Southwest Prairie Conference championship outright and, perhaps, a No. 1 seed in the playoffs with a victory on the road over their district rivals. Dondre Adams …

Downers South Streaks to Top of Conference Heap

A solid running attack gives the Mustangs a 28-14 victory over Addison Trail and clinches at least a share of the WSC Gold Title.

It wasn't pretty, but Downers Grove South managed a 28-14 football victory over conference rival Addison Trail on Friday night. The win over the Blazers guarantees the Mustangs at least a share of the West Suburban Conference Gold title. But Downers Grove South (6-2, 5-0) isn't going to be satisfied with a share of the crown. "We wanna go over and win this outright," South coach John Belskis said of the Mustangs' regular-season finale at Morton. Downers South has battled injuries all year and struggled with miscues against Addison Trail (4-4, 4-1), committing several penalties and mistakes on both sides of the ball. "We need to play better," Belskis said. "We didn't play good fundamental football." The worst mistake of the night was a …

Downers South Rises in Poll Thanks to Dynamite 'D'

Mustangs have pitched four shutouts and allowed 14 points in their last five games, all victories.

1.    Joliet Catholic Academy (6-1, 3-1): Tonight vs. Marist, Memorial Stadium, Joliet. Classic matchup of run vs. pass. JCA features a three-headed monster in its backfield—Josh Ferguson, Malin Jones and Breshion Tucker. All three run wild behind a big offensive line. Marist counters with the passing of Luke Oosterbaan. He completed 10 straight in the first half of a 35-10 victory over St. Viator. The two teams are locked in a three-way tie for second in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. Last week: JCA No. 1. 2.    Plainfield South (7-0, 5-0): Tonight vs. Plainfield East. Welcome back, Dondre. South's Dondre Adams returned from an ankle injury in grand style. He rushed for 207 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns in the …

Mediocre Mustangs Still Make it Five Straight

it was sloppy, but Downers Grove South brings back the Rebel Cannon with a 27-0 victory over Hinsdale South

DARIEN -- Downers Grove South football coach John Belskis was succinct. "This is not the way a good football team plays," Belskis said after his Mustangs blanked Hinsdale South 27-0 on Friday night. The win was the fifth straight for Downers Grove South (5-2, 4-0) and came in the annual border war between the two schools for possession of the Rebel Cannon. And, yet, Belskis' point was hard to argue. The game was an inelegant affair at best, littered with penalties, sloppy play and an inconsistent effort from the Mustangs. They were rescued from their own mediocrity by a third-string tailback who hadn't played the position until this week. Danny Leach is a regular in the Downers South defensive backfield, but with Josh Williams out with a …
