No one was injured in the crash, which occurred late Wednesday morning in Market Place Plaza on 75th Street, police said.
No one was injured Wednesday when the driver of a pickup truck accidentally backed into a Darien storefront, police said. Darien Deputy Police Chief John Cooper said the truck crashed into Fruitful Yield Health Foods, 2159 75th St., late Wednesday morning after the driver's foot became stuck on the accelerator. The man was not believed to have been driving under the influence. No injuries were reported, and the incident is still under investigation, Cooper said. Fruitful Yield was forced to close Wednesday due to the extensive damage to the front of the store. Witnesses said that the neighboring Jenny Craig window also sustained considerable damage. A Downers Grove South High School student noticed a suspicious vehicle on her way home from school Wednesday afternoon, prompting an investigation by the Darien Police Department. The student was walking home around 3:53 p.m. near 71st Street and Exner Road in Darien when she noticed an older, gold minivan pass and brake just ahead of her, police said. There was no conversation between the student and the male driver and no attempt was made to coerce the student to the vehicle, police said. As a preventive measure, the student walked between residential yards. Police said she noticed the vehicle circle the block several times before leaving the area. Body was found early Wednesday near 67th and Cass.
Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown said Thursday a man found lying dead on the ground near 67th St. and Cass Ave. Wednesday morning has been identified as Joseph Crockett, 49, formerly of Carol Stream. According to Brown, no foul play is suspected in the man’s death, which he said is “likely alcohol related.” Absolute confirmation will depend on the results of toxicology reports, the chief added. Crockett had resided with his sister in Carol Stream, Brown said, but most recently had been living at The Ponds apartment complex in Westmont, where the department of health sometimes houses subjects who are undergoing treatment. Ken Boehm and Ernest Brown took different paths to their roles as police chief, but both took the reins in Woodridge and Darien this year.
Both Darien and Woodridge welcomed new police chiefs in 2012, bringing new leadership to the towns' departments. Ken Boehm, Woodridge Boehm has served with the Woodridge Police Department for 24 years, first serving as a patrol officer in Feb. 1988. He was promoted to sergeant in June 1999 and then to deputy chief in June 2005. While he had opportunities to go to other communities, Boehm stayed in Woodridge, he said, because he found a home here. "It's a great department," Boehm said. "There's a comrarderie that exists here. It's very warming, like meeting old friends. They greeted me with open arms." Man was found Wednesday near 67th and Cass.
Darien police are investigating the death of a man near 67th Street and Cass Avenue after finding a body early Wednesday morning. Police Chief Ernest Brown said a 911 call came in to police at 7:30 a.m. about a man lying on the ground near the border of Darien and Westmont. The man was a white male, and police have a tentative identification but are waiting for the next of kin to positively identify the man before releasing any more information. Brown said police are conducting a death investigation and wouldn't say whether any foul play is suspected. "I don't want to go out on a limb," he said. Darien police reported a home burglary and retail theft and arrested Woodridge residents in connection with the incidents.
MONDAY, DEC. 3 Kishann L. Humphrey, 19, of the 2500 block of Crystal Court in Woodridge, was charged with retail theft. Police said Humphrey walked into the Jewel store, 7335 Cass Ave., at 8:15 p.m. with an empty backpack. An officer in the store noticed Humphrey leaving the store with two bottles of alcohol in his bag. The total value was $30.94. He was given an ordinance citation and has a pending court date. SUNDAY, NOV. 25 Joel D. Bessa, 20, of the 7600 block of Deerfield in Woodridge, was arrested on a theft warrant at 10:30 a.m. Police said Bessa stole numerous pieces of jewelry worth more than $2,000 from a home in the 7600 block of Adams. FRIDAY, NOV. 16 Eimantas Giniunas, 21, of the 8200 block of Geneva Street in Woodridge, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, improper lane use and leaving the roadway after driving his car off the road at Plainfield and Redondo in Darien and crashing when two tires popped, police said. Police said Giniunas smelled like alcohol and refused testing. He was given a Dec. 24 court date. A passenger in the car, 18-year-old Dawn M. Alexander, told police she was drinking and was charged with illegal consumption by a minor. She then told police she had illegal prescription drugs that didn't belong to her hidden in her bra. A Darien man charged with kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at knifepoint and murdering her friend will be held without bond in DuPage County Jail. Joseph Spitalli, 34, of the 7500 block of Country Lane in Darien, appeared in court Monday morning and was denied bail. He's charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping, a Class X felony. If convicted he faces life in prison with no possibility of parole. He's scheduled to appear in court Dec. 17 in front of Judge Daniel Guerin. A Darien man has been charged with first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping after DuPage County officials said he killed one person and then kidnapped a woman at knifepoint Friday. Joseph Spitalli, 34, of 7529 Country Lane in Darien, was taken into custody Sunday and charged with murder in the stabbing death of 31-year-old Teymur Huseynli. Spitalli was also charged with aggravated kidnapping after officials said he kidnapped Huseynli's girlfriend. Darien police responded at 12:25 a.m. Friday to a battery call on Wildwood Court in Darien, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's press release.
