The magazine's 2013 report out this week recognizes several Illinois schools.
On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked North High School at No. 885 among high schools in the country, with a "Newsweek Score" of 3.06. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about CHS D99 North's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International …

Lucca throws for three touchdowns, runs for another in York's 41-0 rout.
It was Downers Grove North’s homecoming Friday night, but York did all the celebrating. The visiting Dukes used their high-powered offense, which has scored 249 points this season, to rout the Trojans 41-0 at Carstens Field in Downers Grove and remain unbeaten in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action with two weeks to go before a much-anticipated showdown with Glenbard West that likely will determine the league championship. York (5-1, 3-0) amassed 465 yards of offense, 304 of which came on the ground. Running back Ken Boesenberg, an often-overlooked cog in the Dukes’ well-oiled machine, didn’t score but rushed for 134 yards on 13 carries. “We like to establish the run game first and then evidently that opens up the passing game…

The district sent out an e-release Friday afternoon stating it was optimistic it would receive the quality of bus service it expected from Westway.
Bus service "greatly improved" this week for the majority of routes at North and South High Schools, a District 99 release said Friday. "Right now, we are optimistic that Westway Coach will continue to provide us with the level of service we demand and have outlined in our agreement with them," the release said. The district apologized to students affected, saying Westway's poor service directly reflected on District 99. "Even though we contract with an outside company, we recognize and take responsibility for the fact that their service is a direct reflection upon us," the release said. "Our top priority has been to work through the challenges with Westway Coach to ensure that our students receive safe and reliable transportation to and …

Trojans inexperienced but confident they will improve after two losing seasons.
The Downers Grove North High School football team is coming off its worst two-year period in school history, so it’s fair to say the Trojans have more than a little hunger in them as they prepare for the 2011 season. Downers North went 3-15 over the past two seasons, including a 2-7 mark last fall. The 2009 squad, which was 1-8, set a school record for losses, but last year’s squad had a lot of heartbreak, losing five games by a touchdown or less. “We lost so many close games last year,” Downers North coach John Wander said. “We were up in eight of those nine games and we ended up 2-7. “We scored enough points. We couldn’t stop Sister Teresa, so we’re really concentrating on defense and we’re saying we’ve got a little chip on our shoulders…

Hornets' sophomore 112-pounder wins the sectional crown and heads to Champaign at 40-1 on the season.
DOWNERS GROVE–Hinsdale South sophomore wrestler Sebastian Pique had quite the eventful day at Saturday’s Class 3A Downers Grove North Sectional. First, the 112-pounder knocked off Glenbard North standout Johnny Gosinski in the semifinals. Then, he was able to avenge, for the second time this season, his only loss of the year in the finals. After losing to Glenbard East junior Angelo San Juan (36-7) in the first tournament of the year, he turned around and beat him for the title at Palatine. Then Saturday, he continued his redemption tour with a 13-8 decision in the finals. “I don’t really like to hold grudges, but I’m really happy,” said Pique, who advances to next weekend’s state tournament at Assembly Hall in Champaign. “I wrestled a …

The Mustangs' aggressive defense, led by guard Jerron Wilbut, has sparked the team to easy wins of late, including Saturday's 44-point rout of Downers North.
Downers Grove South’s emphasis on defense has been a major factor in the Mustangs’ 13-game winning streak to date. “Really, the last few weeks we’ve put an emphasis on defense,” Mustangs coach Jay Baum said. “We want our defense to lead into our offense.” The Mustangs put that into practice in their 64-20 rout of Downers Grove North on Saturday. They forced 14 steals and more than 25 turnovers in the game. Mustangs guard Jerron Wilbut and forward Kevin Honn were particularly disruptive, combining for six steals. “We wanted to pick up intensity on defense,” Wilbut said. “We obviously have a lot of talent on offense, so we focus on our defense.” The defense was aggressive in the halfcourt, keeping the Trojans scoreless for almost the …

Not fun to watch! Wander needed to at least try to pass the ball 30-35 times against York who defensively may be as good or better than GBW. The defense lived on the field all night. Good news is the Soph Trojans won again to move to 6-0! 2012 hopefully holds promise. These last 2 years have been hard to watch although this team had played competively in every game until last night's performance…   more ›
