Former nuclear engineer Michael Buhrman, 32, of Coal City, was sentenced in absentia to 40 years in prison on Wednesday for the May 2012 aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm of a woman’s car in a Kohl’s parking lot in eastern Woodridge near the Darien border. According to a DuPage County State’s Attorney press release, once apprehended, Buhrman would be required to serve at least 50 percent of the sentence. He was convicted in mid-April, also in absentia, after a 45-minute jury deliberation. Buhrman, who removed a GPS monitoring device in September 2012 and jumped bail, remains a fugitive. A judge overruled attorneys' objections and will allow cameras in the trial of Willow Springs resident Johnny Borizov, set to begin next month, for a Darien triple-murder.
The trial of a man charged with plotting the murder of three Darien residents will be open to photographers and videographers, the Chicago Tribune reported Monday, a first in DuPage County according to the newspaper. Johnny Borizov of Willow Springs will be on trial beginning April 16 for the murder of Jeffrey, Lori and Michael Kramer, who were shot to death in March 2010 by Jacob Nodarse in a scheme, prosecutors allege, plotted by Borizov and meant to kill Angela Kramer, daughter of Jeffrey and Lori, sister of Michael, and father of Borizov's son. Dorian Luzaj, 29, pleaded guilty to cannabis trafficking Thursday morning.
A Woodridge man who led a drug ring with ties to California pleaded guilty to trafficking charges Thursday and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Dorian Luzaj, 29, of the 6300 block of Winston Drive in Woodridge, pleaded guilty to cannabis trafficking, a Class X felony, during a hearing with Judge Robert Kleeman. Luzaj was the leader of a drug ring with ties to California that was responsible for the distribution of more than 600 pounds of cannabis per month to other cannabis dealers throughout the Chicago area, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office. A man accused in the stabbing death and sex assault of a Woodridge resident pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday. Adam Belmont, 23, of Northlake, is charged with first-degree murder, home invasion, aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and abuse of a corpse. Police say Belmont went to ex-girlfriend Alyssa Van Meter's Woodridge apartment at about 9 p.m. Dec. 15 and climbed through a window in her balcony. About a week earlier, the two broke up. It's alleged that Belmont choked Van Meter until she was unconscious, then stabbed her one time in the heart. Belmont is also accused of sexually assaulting the woman after stabbing her. DuPage County prosecutors hope to try Michael Buhrman, 31, of Coal City, in absentia. They say he has possibly fled the country. Buhrman is accused of stealing a car in Woodridge at gunpoint.
Last May, a man in a high-quality latex mask approached a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am parked near Kohl's, 1001 75th St. in Woodridge. The man, who the driver thought to be "an old drunk homeless guy" whispered if she was okay, according to the Chicago Tribune. When the driver said she was fine, the man pointed a loaded .45-caliber handgun at her chin, demanded her car keys and sped away. Michael Buhrman, 31, of Coal City, was later arrested by Woodridge police, who said they also recovered the mask, a two-way radio and the gun. At the time, Buhrman was working as a licensed senior reactor operator at a nuclear power plant in Morris. He is also a Navy veteran. A Woodridge man was found not guilty of murdering his father with a weed trimmer by reason of insanity, according to The Chicago Tribune. Yashesh Desai, 22, of Woodridge, was accused of his father's murder in August 2011. On Monday, DuPage County Judge Robert Kleeman ruled Desai not guilty based on insanity. Desai was charged with first-degree murder in August 2011 after Woodridge police responded to a call and found Desai's father, Sanjiv Desai, lying on a futon in the computer room of his house in Plover Court. A Northlake man is accused of stabbing to death and then sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend, a Woodridge resident. He was denied bond in DuPage County Court on Monday. According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, 23-year-old Adam Belmont, of Northlake, is charged with the first-degree murder of his ex-girlfriend, Woodridge resident Alyssa Van Meter. Belmont appeared in court Monday and was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of home invasion, both Class X felonies. Woodridge: Prosecutors will ask a judge to hold a trial in absentia in the case of the Coal City man accused of a "thrill" carjacking in Woodridge earlier this year, court documents show. Michael Buhrman has not appeared in court since his GPS monitor sent a tampering alert to authorities in September, which later prompted a judge to forfeit Buhrman's $200,000 bail.
