John Perry, former Woodridge village administrator and resident, was recently awared the Maxwell Public Administration Alumni Award from Syracuse Univeristy in New York. The award is presented annually to an individual who exemplifies the ideals of public service espoused by the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the School's Public Administration and International Affairs Department as articulated in the Athenian Oath. Perry retired in 2009 after a 37-year career in city management. Most recently he served for 20 years as village administrator in Woodridge, which was named one of the "100 Best Small Places to Live" by Money Magazine during his tenure.

John Perry knows Woodridge. He served as Woodridge's village administrator for 20 years. And for the third time, Perry is the president of the Woodridge Rotary Club, of which he is a charter member. (His first term as president was in 1993; the second in 1997. Perry wrote of his Woodridge experiences in Blueprint for Building Community, a book on management that explains his point of view of being an elected official and engaging with the residents. He said his expertise provides advice and lessons for his readers. According to the village website, during Perry’s term as the village administrator, the population grew from 20,000 to 36,000 and became listed as one of “100 Best Small Places to Live” by Money Magazine. Former Woodridge Village Administrator John Perry published his book Blueprint for Building Community this spring. The book is a how-to for city managers, but it also contains plenty of information about Woodridge and its history. This first excerpt is Perry's condensed history of Woodridge. John Perry's “Blueprint for Building Community” offers reflection as well as a how-to for city managers and officials.
What's a former village administrator to do in his retirement? If he's John Perry, he writes a book. Perry retired last year after serving 20 years as the village administrator in Woodridge. Before that, he served as Park Forest's village manager from 1983 to 1989. He currently is a part of the Rotary Club of Woodridge. His book, Blueprint for Building Community, is a 156-page guide for public officials. Perry reflects on his experiences in both Woodridge and Park Forest and outlines the principles he believes create good government. "I wrote the book for myself," Perry said.
