Homicides Shocked Darien, Woodridge Residents in 2012

Two brutal homicides, allegedly at the hands of jealous ex-boyfriends, as well as a drive-by shooting, saddened local readers this year.

Three senseless crimes resulted in shocking murders this year in the Darien and Woodridge area. Two of them allegedly came at the hands of jealous ex-boyfriends, one who was accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and another accused of killing his ex's new boyfriend. The other, the drive-by shooting of a Hinsdale South graduate, rocked an apartment complex in nearby Willowbrook. Darien: The Dec. 17 hearing for Joseph Spitalli's arraignment in his murder case has been pushed back after a request for cameras in the courtroom was filed. Spitalli is charged in the November murder of a man dating Spitalli's ex-girlfriend. A motion has been filed seeking extended media coverage of Spitalli's arraignment. The judge set a Jan. 9 hearing on the media request, while scheduling the arraignment for Jan. 14, records show. The case of a Coal City man accused of a "thrill" carjacking in Woodridge in May returns to court Tuesday, but it might happen without suspect Michael Buhrman. Read about that and other DuPage County Court cases.

The case of a Coal City man accused of a "thrill" carjacking in Woodridge in May returns to court Tuesday, but it might happen without the man charged in attendance. A warrant for Michael Buhrman was issued in September after his GPS monitor sent a tampering alert to authorities. Police in Coal City did not find him at his home and Buhrman has not been seen since. A judge has forfeited Buhrman's $200,000 bail and could set the case for trial. Police arrested Buhrman, a former engineer at the Dresden Nuclear Power Plant in Morris, after he allegedly wore a mask and pointed a gun at a woman sitting inside a car on May 9. Prosecutors unsuccessfully sought to increase Buhrman's bail to $1 million over the summer after a woman reported Buhrman …

UPDATE: Bail Denied for Man Accused of Kidnapping Ex-Girlfriend, Murdering Man

Joseph Spitalli, of Darien, will be held without bond in DuPage County Jail. He's charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at knifepoint.

A Darien man charged with kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at knifepoint and murdering her friend will be held without bond in DuPage County Jail.  Joseph Spitalli, 34, of the 7500 block of Country Lane in Darien, appeared in court Monday morning and was denied bail. He's charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated kidnapping, a Class X felony. If convicted he faces life in prison with no possibility of parole.  He's scheduled to appear in court Dec. 17 in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.  Police say they responded to a battery call at 12:25 a.m. Friday in Wildwood Court and found 31-year-old Skokie resident Teymur Huseynli dead in the front lawn from a knife wound. Tribune: Darien Kidnap Victim had 'Always been Afraid' of Kidnapper

A woman kidnapped at knifepoint early Friday had been denied an order of protection against her attacker last month, the Tribune reported Monday.

A Darien man charged with murder and aggravated kidnapping was ordered to be held without bail Monday.  Joseph Spitalli, 34, of 7529 Country Lane in Darien, was taken into custody Sunday and charged with murder in the stabbing death of 31-year-old Teymur Huseynli, of Skokie. Spitalli was also charged with aggravated kidnapping after officials said he kidnapped Huseynli's ex-girlfriend, 28-year-old Kristina Baltrimaviciene. Officials: Darien Man Charged with Murder, Kidnapping

A Darien man was charged with first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping following the murder, which the State's Attorney's Office said took place on Friday in Darien.

A Darien man has been charged with first degree murder and aggravated kidnapping after DuPage County officials said he killed one person and then kidnapped a woman at knifepoint Friday.  Joseph Spitalli, 34, of 7529 Country Lane in Darien, was taken into custody Sunday and charged with murder in the stabbing death of 31-year-old Teymur Huseynli. Spitalli was also charged with aggravated kidnapping after officials said he kidnapped Huseynli's girlfriend. Darien police responded at 12:25 a.m. Friday to a battery call on Wildwood Court in Darien, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's press release. They found Huseynli dead on the lawn of an apparent knife wound.  Officials aren't releasing any other information at this time. …
