Lakeview Students Tell Story of Chicago at History Fair

Students spent months researching and developing projects about Chicago and Illinois history that were presented Friday during a History Fair.

The following was submitted by Lakeview Junior High seventh-grad social studies teacher Jacob Little: The History Fair is a presentation of student projects based on Chicago and Illinois History. Lakeview students have learned thorough research skills through the use of database research, visiting libraries, using resources such as the Chicago History Museum and even interviewing experts on particular topics. With the collected research, students have analyzed and studied the significance of their topics. Their projects “tell the story” of why their topic is important.  This Fair has required a great deal of work and research by our students. Students began exploring Chicago and Illinois history in October, deciding which topic to center …

Bracelet Sales Raise $750 for Local Boy’s Recovery

Lakeview and Prairieview students sold the rubber bracelets this week, but a local dad said this is just the beginning.

There's no greater example of power in numbers than when a community unites to do good. In the nearly two weeks since Lakeview Junior High eighth-grader Hunter was struck by a car while crossing Beller Drive in Darien, hundreds have attended vigils and draped the area in orange. Now that same spirit of togetherness has raised $750 to help with the 14-year-old Downers Grove boy's recovery as he remains hospitalized in Oak Lawn. Students at Lakeview and Prairieview Elementary began selling $1 rubber bracelets this week that say "Hunter's Hope." A Downers Grove man who asked to remain anonymous donated the red bands to the schools. The man, whose son is good friends with Hunter, said he started the project in equal parts to raise money for …

Orange Adorns Local Landmarks to Support Injured Boy's Recovery

From Lakeview Junior High to the Darien Police Department, community members are showing their thoughts are with the eighth-grader injured in a Feb. 26 car accident.

Bursts of orange have popped up throughout Darien, Woodridge and Downers Grove over the past week. With vinyl tablecloths and plastic cups, friends and family of a Lakeview Junior High eighth-grader struck by a car Feb. 26 have ensured that all who know Hunter keep him at the forefront of their minds. The Downers Grove boy is recovering from critical injuries sustained when he was struck by a car making a right turn at the intersection of Beller and Lemont Road in Darien. Hunter remains at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The hospital is not releasing any further information about his condition. Last week, the community held prayer vigils at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish and Lakeview. Fr. Gavin Quinn urged those at Wednesday's …

Hi Abby, Hunter's still in the hospital, and they're not publicly releasing information about his condition. But he's got a lot of people rooting for him! If and when more information is available for public release, I'll be sure to post it. Thanks, Lauren Williamson Editor, Darien Patch   more ›

Community Unites in Hope for Lakeview Student Struck by Car

Hundreds gathered at Lakeview Junior High Wednesday in support of an eighth-grader's recovery.

The message of the night was simple but strong: “Never, never, never, never give up.”  That Winston Churchill quote accompanied each candle at the vigil Wednesday for a 14-year-old boy. It was repeated throughout Fr. Gavin Quinn’s speech. And it was in the faces of each of the hundreds of students and parents who filled Lakeview Junior High’s gym in support of the eighth-grader’s recovery.  The boy, of Downers Grove, remained in the hospital Wednesday after sustaining serious injuries when he was struck by a car Sunday while crossing Beller Drive in Darien with his bike. The hospital is not releasing any further details about his condition and the family has asked that his name be withheld. As students and parents filed into Lakeview’s gym…

Prayer Service, Vigil Scheduled for Boy Hit By Car

Tuesday's prayer service is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. A vigil is set to take place from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeview Junior High.

Friends and family will gather at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a prayer service at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, 8404 Cass Ave. in Darien, for a 14-year-old Downers Grove boy police say was pinned underneath a car Sunday.  The boy, who has not been identified by authorities, was crossing Beller Drive with his bike in Darien late Sunday afternoon when he was hit by a car making a right turn onto Lemont Road, Darien police said. He was initially treated for serious injuries at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital’s trauma center in Downers Grove before being airlifted to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The hospital is not releasing any information about the boy’s condition because he is a minor.  Fr. Gavin Quinn will lead Tuesday…

I'm praying for this beautiful boy also. We moved from Timberlake @ 87th and Lorraine to Ca. in 1970 but I still like to keep up with what's going on back there and this story just broke my heart. I have 6 grandkids and if one of them was crossing a major intersection by themselves like that, I'd be very afraid. I'm praying very hard for him and for his "Mommy and Daddy". The team received the honor in recognition of their third place finish at the state meet.

Local Students Rally to Wipe Out Cancer

The Cancer Smashers kicked off a fundraising competition Friday with a rally at Eisenhower Junior High.

One dollar at a time, the kids in District 61 and District 66 are hoping to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Positive energy filled Eisenhower Junior High’s gym Friday as the students kicked off a weeklong fundraiser for the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center at Northwestern University. Students from Lace Elementary and EJH will compete against the kids at Prairieview Elementary and Lakeview Junior High to see which district can raise the most funds. They’ll raise the money by selling paper fists for $1 — fists that represent their goal of knocking out cancer. The fundraiser is the brainchild of Beth Tischler, who chairs Cancer Smashers, a youth offshoot of the H Foundation, a local group that raises money for cancer research. “I …
