Chicago Bears defensive end Corey Wootton paid a visit to Downers Grove North High School on Monday to chat with marketing students about his experience in the NFL. Wootton, 25, was a guest speaker in North High's sports and entertainment marketing classes, which apply marketing and communications principles to college and professional sports, as well as the movie and music industries. A graduate of Northwestern University, Wootton shared with students the keys to his success in the NFL. The Cancer Smashers event raised funds to benefit the Robert H. Lurie Center at Northwestern University.
They’re called the Cancer Smashers. It’s no wonder, then, that their winter fundraiser was such a smashing success. Students in District 61 and District 66 raised $22,676.96 over the course of the past week to help fund cancer research at Northwestern University’s Robert H. Lurie Center. “I’m extremely proud of all the students from both districts that they came together to raise this much money in one week,” said Eisenhower Junior High Principal Mike Fitzgerald. “I think it’s amazing.” EJH and Lace School raised a combined total of $14,000, while Prairieview Elementary and Lakeview Junior High took in just more than $8,600. The Cancer Smashers kicked off a fundraising competition Friday with a rally at Eisenhower Junior High.
One dollar at a time, the kids in District 61 and District 66 are hoping to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Positive energy filled Eisenhower Junior High’s gym Friday as the students kicked off a weeklong fundraiser for the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center at Northwestern University. Students from Lace Elementary and EJH will compete against the kids at Prairieview Elementary and Lakeview Junior High to see which district can raise the most funds. They’ll raise the money by selling paper fists for $1 — fists that represent their goal of knocking out cancer.
