During the Easter season, take time to help others.
Last Friday, I had the pleasure of covering the St. Baldrick’s event at Downers Grove South High School, where nearly 60 students and faculty members shaved their heads and raised more than $42,000 for kids cancer awareness. To see all those students happily and willingly shave their heads for such an important cause was a feel good for everyone there. With the Lent and Easter season upon us there’s been a lot of talk about what we can do about improving ourselves and becoming better people. As children, many of us were taught that we needed to “give up” something for Lent. The Emmaus Community church in Chicago Heights served as a PADS facility on Christmas, offering meals, haircuts and a warm respite from the winter.

Carol Marshall stood in the middle of a dozen volunteers who in a moment became food servers. Prepared food had just arrived for the Christmas dinner on Saturday at The Emmaus Community in Chicago Heights. The church served as a facility for South Suburban PADS, or Public Action to Deliver Shelter, on Christmas, offering hot meals, a comfortable environment and haircuts for the homeless. A buffet line of homemade turkey, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, and pies was set up, ready for service. But with so many people who decided to spend their Christmas helping out at Emmaus, Marshall needed to find more tasks for them. Then it hit her. DuPage PADS kicked off it 25th year of service Nov. 3 with the Wake Up Your Spirit Breakfast. Benedictine University hosted the eighth annual event, which was held in the school's Krasa Center. In the last year the group has aided over 1,100 of those in need. Executive Director Carol Simler said 75 percent of those who take advantage of PADS listed their last given address in DuPage County. While shelters provide temporary housing, support services and employment assistance, their main goal is to get people into permanent housing. Simler said PADS currently has 55 permanent housing apartments, with two on the way. Funding for PADS comes in a variety of ways.
