DGS P.E. Teacher's Book to Be Released in May

Kirk Mango's book, "Becoming a True Champion," helps teen athletes make decisions that will empower them to achieve with integrity.

For years Kirk Mango has worked diligently toward one goal, writing a book. Dedication and determination aren’t new to Mango, 54, a two-time college All-American gymnast. At the heart of his book, Becoming a True Champion, Achieving Athletic Excellence From the Inside Out, which will be published in May, are the lessons and life-skills he learned as an athlete, coach and parent. Now he hopes to share what he has learned with young athletes. Mango, a Naperville resident and physical education teacher for more than 30 years at Downers Grove South High School, said he became concerned about what he was hearing from young athletes and parents. He said the focus for many young athletes seemed to be less about learning through hard work and more…

Parents: How to Support Your Kids in Sports

Tips for keeping the fun in the game for your and your child.

Over the course of the last month my kids have attended softball, volleyball and hockey tryouts for the upcoming sports seasons. While this is a very exciting, yet stressful, time for kids, I did notice some parents actually making the situation worse for their kids: In all these situations, I will never forget that embarrassed, dejected look on the kids' faces. The one person who is always supposed to be there for them with words of encouragement had just cut them down at a time when they needed them to be their biggest cheerleader! As I mentioned in a previous article about team sports, organized sports for children provide an opportunity to learn sports and team skills, as well as stress the importance of working together as a team. And…

Local High Schools Give Nod to New IHSA Concussion Guidelines

A new IHSA guideline will not allow athletes to return to play or practice until they have written clearance from a licensed health care provider.

Two local high schools are lauding the new guidelines for student athletes returning from concussions. Last month, the Illinois High School AssociationBoard of Directors approved a policy that states “athletes cannot return to play or practice until they are evaluated by and receive written clearance from a licensed health care provider.” Tim Feigh, athletic director at Hinsdale South High School, said school officials began looking into better safeguards two years ago when about eight athletes were out with concussions during the football season. “We couldn’t figure out what was going on,” Feigh said. An evaluation found, among other issues, the athletes’ helmets were not properly inflated to fit their heads. “We had to change policies …

Former Mustang Plays for Mattingly in Arizona

Ryan Curry's long season ended with a six-week stint playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League.

Everyone playing in the 19-year old Arizona Fall League comes with the express idea of hastening their journey to the Major Leagues, and each year more players seem to have an impact on their teams. The AFL is rightly considered the "finishing school for prospects" and while Downers South' s Ryan Curry may not be a step away from the Bigs, he certainly has benefited from his six weeks in the Valley of the Sun. This is a fitting end to a great season for the Florida Marlin prospect, a 2003 DGS graduate. As a member of the Phoenix Desert Dogs, he's had the opportunity to play for new Dodger manager, Don Mattingly.  Aside from the experience and information he has been able to share with his young charges, Mattingly has taught them about …
