Girls Swimming: Downers Grove North's Gabby Sims Wins State Title

Sims, a junior, broke a pool record in the 100-yard freestyle, leading the Trojans to a sixth-place finish at the IHSA swimming and diving finals.

Downers Grove North junior Gabby Sims won her second individual state title in dramatic fashion Saturday, breaking the pool record in the 100-yard freestyle at the IHSA girls swimming and diving finals in Evanston. Sims posted a pool-record 49.57 in the freestyle final—the second-fastest time ever swum at a state meet. She also became one of only four swimmers in Illinois history to break the 50-second mark at a state meet, according to mom Janice Sims. Gabby Sims finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (54:02), the event she won last year. Finishing first was Glenbrook South senior Olivia Smoliga (51.43), who also won the 50-yard freestyle (21.99). Downers Grove South Speech Team Repeats as State Champs

DGS took first, DGN tied for second in the 2012 Speech state finals in Peoria.

The students of Downers Grove South High School's speech team are back-to-back state champions. DGS took first place at the state speech tournament in Peoria this weekend. It was the last state finals for long-time Head Coach Jan Heiteen, who retires in the spring. Downers Grove North tied for second with Oak Lawn High School.  The Downers Grove South Speech Team has been called the winningest in the state -- in the past five state finals, DGS took first place four times.  Student performances in individual events and performance in the round, in which students perform a 15-minute play, generate points that determine the team winner. District 99 Wrestlers Take Second, Fourth in State

DGS's Willie Anaya took fourth and DGN' Cullen Cummings took second in state Saturday.

Two wrestlers from Community High School District 99 were among the best in the state at the individual wrestling state finals Saturday.  Cullen Cummings, of Downers Grove North, made it to the championship match-up for the 132-pound weight class but was defeated by Sal Annoreno of Bartlett High School.  Willie Anaya, of Downers Grove South, was defeated in overtime in his 160-pound third place match-up.  Anaya took third place at state in his weight class last year. 2 District 99 Wrestlers Continue in State Finals

DGN's Willie Anaya and DGS' Cullen Cummings have won their state quarterfinal meets.

Both Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South have a wrestler continuing in the IHSA 3A state finals.  DGS's Willie Anaya (28-2) took third place at state in his weight class last year. He took second at the 3A Glenbard North sectional last Saturday.  Cummings defeated Clay Shelton from Plainfield North High School in the prelims and Mike Mizaur from Mt. Carmel High School in his 132-pound quarterfinal match-up. Anaya defeated Zach Benkovich in Hononegah High School in the prelims and Michael Woulfe from Oak Park River Forest High School in his 160-pound quarterfinal match-up.  Zack Urbanski (35-7) and fellow senior Justin Novotny (35-10), from Downers Grove North, also qualified for state.   Urbanski was defeated by Tom Howell from …

DGN, DGS Speech Teams Compete in State Finals Friday

Downers Grove South took first, Downers Grove North took second in their sectional tournament.

The Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South High School Speech teams are headed to state.  Downers Grove South took first place in its sectional Saturday with 66 points. Downers Grove North took second with 48. Hinsdale Central High School came in third with 47 points.  Students are ranked in three preliminary rounds; those scores determine the final rounds. Students in performance in the round perform just once. Each ranking corresponds to a certain number of points. The team with the most points wins the tournament. Downers Grove South students qualified for state in 12 of the 14 individual events and performance in the round, in which students perform a 15-minute play. Both the Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South co-ed varsity cheerleading squads had their final practices before state Friday. Woodridge Patch was there to get video of the squads showing off their skills.  Both teams qualified for the 2012 IHSA Co-Ed Division State Finals at their sectional Saturday, scoring within .37 points of each other. DGS took second with 86.57 points; DGN took third with 86.2 points. Barrington High School took first place with a score of 89.93. The squads will compete against 23 other schools. The preliminary round for the large and co-ed divisions will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, IL. The final round for the co-ed division will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.   We'll…
