Heroin, Synthetic Marijuana Strike Fear in Parents

Year in Review: 2012 saw an outcry against deadly drugs becoming more popular with teens.

Karen Dobner said her son, Max, never gave her cause to worry. He never spoke ill of anyone. He never lost his temper. He was never disrespectful or rude. He was a health nut and refused to eat at Burger King or McDonald’s. She has no answer for what led Max to use synthetic marijuana on June 14, 2011, but she believes it was because he thought it was healthier than marijuana. Later Karen received a call that her son, driving at almost 100 mph, had plowed thrown an intersection, hit a wall, went airborne and crashed through the front of a home. He died in the accident at the age of 19. She spoke out against that false assumption at a Woodridge village forum earlier this year.  Read more: Mom: ‘I Didn’t Know What Synthetic Marijuana Was …

Mom: ‘I Didn’t Know What Synthetic Marijuana Was Until My Son Died’

Police covered the dangers of synthetic drugs at a topic forum Tuesday.

Dobner spoke out against that false assumption at a village of Woodridge topic forum Tuesday night.  After taking synthetic marijuana – or poison sprayed on leaves, as she calls it – Max called his brother to say his heart was racing and he was "freaking out." Later Karen received a call that her son, driving at almost 100 mph, had plowed thrown an intersection, hit…

Kids are finding more and more ingenious ways to get legally high. If dangerous synthetic drugs go away, they'll use common household items like toothpaste to give them an ecstasy like high. Toothpasting is as scary as any street drug out there and is a quick growing fad. Us parents need to be especially watchful these days.   more ›

Last Chance: Village of Woodridge Synthetic Drug Forum

The forum will take place on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Woodridge Public Library.

The Woodridge Police Department will host a topic forum Tuesday on synthetic drugs.  Synthetic drugs include synthetic marijuana, synthetic stimulants and synthetic hallucinogens. They pose a public health and safety threat to Woodridge residents because they result in adverse health effects and have been linked to severe psychotic episodes, increased heart rates, panic attacks and hallucinations, police officials said. The forum, part of the village's annual topic forum series, will be held at 7 p.m. May 8 at the Woodridge Public Library. Police will cover what synthetic drugs are, where they are obtained and how to identify if someone has ingested them. Parents will learn how to better detect if their child has encountered synthetic …

Sheriff's Office Seizes Million Dollars of Synthetic Cannabis and Bath Salts in Lombard

The Woodridge village board passed an ordinance banning these substances in the community on Dec. 15.

Two men were arrested after a million dollars of synthetic marijuana and bath salts, drug paraphernalia and cash were seized from a business in unincorporated Lombard Dec. 15.  This was the first search warrant issued for these types of substances in DuPage County after they became illegal in July, according to a DuPage County Sheriff's Office press release.  The Woodridge village board passed an ordinance last month banning the sale, delivery, possession and use of synthetic alternative drugs in the community.  The Lombard incident took place at Sergio's Discount Smoke Shop, 21 W 500 North Ave.  Synethetic marijuana (K2, Spice and Red Magic, the release said) and bath salts (Charley Sheene and Ultra), drug paraphernalia and more than $5,…
