District 68 on Busing: Still "Daily Bumps in the Road"

Westway's new hires should improve service, officials said.

It's almost October, and yes, busing service at Woodridge School District 68 still has "daily bumps in the road," officials said Monday at the district board meeting.  "We're still not where we wish we were or expected to be," Kevin Wegner, assistant superintendent for business, told the board. Thing are much, much better, said Superintendent Cathy Skinner, though a lack of permanent drivers continues to be a problem. "It's been a problem all over DuPage County," she said. Westway Coach, Inc., the company providing the district's busing services, still can't tell Wegner what happened to make service break down as it did, he said. "They didn't tell me why they did not staff up before the start of school," he said. They were four to five …

District 68 Sees Improvements in Bus Service Wednesday

District officials said two-thirds of its routes were on time or between 5-10 minutes late.

Wednesday was the best in terms of bus service for the week, Woodridge School District 68 officials said, and the best day since school started last Wednesday. About two-thirds of bus routes were on time or had a delay of five to 10 minutes, according to Patrick Broncato, assistant superintendent of personnel for the district. A third of bus routes had a delay of more than 10 minutes. There were also some occasional missed pick-ups. Broncato said staff would continue to monitor routes of greater concern but fewer district employees would be on buses or following routes than the past two days. Jill Browning, communications director for District 99, said she had heard mixed reviews and would update the district website with more information …

I like how they say they replaced two employees. Those two employees walked out. They quit. Had it with the execs that couldnt get a computer network in the the office for routes, couldnt hire office staff until August. I guess the guy has to throw someone under the bus.   more ›

District 68 Parent: "I Don't Have Trust"

About a dozen parents shared their concerns, disbelief and outrage Monday night with Westway's poor bus service.

Tom Hanyzewski's daughter was lost on a Westway bus for 40 minutes as her driver tried to find her stop. Her parents didn't know where she was. All of the other student along her route had been dropped off. Her father started driving the bus route to try to find her. When his daughter finally got home, she was emotionally distraught, Hanyzewski said. Incidents like the dozens reported since the first day of school last Wednesday have caused parents like Melody Nicholas to lose trust in the district. "I'm disheartened," Nicholas told the District 68 board Monday night. "I had trust. I don't have trust. I worry about the safety of my son." Nicholas said her son has yet to be picked up for school.  "What would have happened if someone had …

I agree with Mr. Rybowiak. You get what you pay for. Poor service would not be tolerated in the corporate capacity. Unintended consequences must be considered much more carefully when making a decision as large as transporting our children to school. I hope the District 68 will consider terminating Westway's contract at the end of the year. Any business that plans this poorly deserves to be …   more ›

Westway Officials Face Angry District 68 Board, Parents

The bus company has yet to provide a day of service in which students were not left standing at a bus stop without a ride.

Westway didn’t try to make excuses Monday night for why hundreds of students in Downers Grove Grade District 58, Woodridge School District 68 and Community High School District 99 had experienced poor bus service for the past four school days. Officials didn’t provide many answers, either. Monday's service proved perhaps the worst yet, as Westway drivers had trouble navigating new routes handed to them Sunday. Drivers were lost, missed pick-ups and were late in arriving to take students home. One parent commented that a bus from Goodrich Elementary School finally dropped kids off at 5 p.m. -- two hours after school had ended. While district officials said every student who relies on school transportation had been affected by the poor …

Debbie, that was something that was discussed at the board meeting but nothing was settled specifically. I'll check in with the districts this afternoon to see how it's going and ask.   more ›

District 68, 99 Bus Terminal Won't be in Lisle

Bus company Westway Coach will continue to find a location for a bus terminal that will serve the Downers Grove and Woodridge school districts.

Though Lisle village trustees called a 10-minute recess for the village attorney to make revisions to a document that would allow bus company Westway Coach to operate a terminal on Indiana Avenue, they ultimately decided against the special use request in a 4-2 vote Monday evening.  This is the second time the board saw a presentation from the company, which begins serving Downers Grove school districts 58 and 99, and Woodridge School District 68 this school year.  In June trustees voted to send the request back through the planning and zoning process after accusations that the first public hearing had not been conducted properly. District 68 and District 99 said the denied request wouldn't affect bus service for their students. The first …

A Summer's Worth of Bus Terminal Controversy

Request for location rejected by Lisle Village Board Monday night.

With only one week until the start of school, the request for a bus terminal to serve Districts 58, 68 and 99 was rejected by the Lisle Village Board Monday night.   Bus service for District 68 will go on, according to Kevin Wegner, assistant superintendent of business for the district. The district will continue to use its terminal in Lemont, Wegner said. The terminal has been a source of contention for some Lisle residents and business owners who live and work near the proposed location for the terminal.  That contention has caused the request to bounce from the Lisle Planning and Zoning Commission to the Lisle Village Board to the Planning and Zoning Commission and now back to village board again.  The planning board approved a special …
